I have a question for all of you. After reading different threads about RAM lately, I thought, is it actually worth getting DDR2 667 ram over DDR2 533?

Granted the 667 Ram will have 1 cas higher for cas5, while the DDR2 533 ram is rated at cas4. So if you were upgrading the ram on a laptop, and had a choice between 533 or 667, which would you go for? Price not being an issue and the purchase would be for 2x 1 gig sticks. The laptop would generally be used for all sorts of things, including games and regular office apps.

Really depends if you're laptop will run on the higher clock speed of the RAM. My Sony S5 for example won't, the RAM will just clock down to 533Mhz hence I would go for the cheaper alternative

    I'm just wondering...
is 2 GB ram really necessary??

    my sz (sz18gp/c) came with a 512mb
and i'm planning to go and buy another 512mb stick (so total is 1gb)

    that's enough isn't it?

i think 1gb should be enough for most tasks.. including game play
.. in my opinion... 2 gb ram should be needed if you do a lot of photoshop...video editing.. etc..

but i'm not sure, enlighten me please :p

Realistically for most people 2 gig is not necessary, however given that the computers these days use dual channel, I'd rather bite the bullet now and just get 2 gigs so I don't have to think about tossing both sticks if I want to upgrade to 2 gigs.

Yeah the computer will utilize the 667 speed.

After some consideration I've opted to go with 667 since speed increase is better then latency, within reason of course. I remember reading articles about tight latency timings vs increased speed and the general indication was that higher speed is better then lower speed and tight memory timing. (Of course laptops don't really have tight memory timing to begin with)
