It seems to be the common consensus on the forum that ram quality doesn't matter for laptops... well, let's pretend for a moment that price doesn't matter either. If one is willing to shell out for premium ram, is there any level of timing or latency improvements than can be had on either a TZ or SZ when replacing ram? I realize that SR still can't run at a full 800mhz, but it DOES seem that one could get better performance even at 667 mhz by having tighter timings and cas latency... anyone an expert on this?

    Thanks,

    ZK

Ram quality does not matter much since even the cheapest RAM on the market uses IC from reputable chip companies (micron, qimonda, samsung etc). These RAMs are tested to run at the specific JEDEC clock. What makes a "good RAM" is that they can run beyond the JEDEC spec, aka overclocking, Micron for example. However, since 99% of the notebook bios doesn't support overclocking, the potential become irrelevant.

Its not possible to improve the latency of RAM (even the chip is capable of running more aggressive timing) on TZ since the bios simply reads the SPD information form RAM and set clock at manufacture recommendation. Nope, 800Mhz will not work due to MB limitation. I am currently running 667Mhz 3-3-3-9 with Qimonda chips.

so psun, 3 3 3 9 is better than factory timings for the sz correct?

I am not sure what is the latency on OEM memory from SZ since I own a TZ. But 3-3-3-9 for 667Mhz is not bad at all, since I only paid $58 for a 2GB stick.

Let me pose the question then... what is the BEST memory on the market to put in a sz 691?

    Thanks,
