Unlike most Vaios I see in their blue/black boxes, my SZ340P4 came from buy.com in an all brown box with an official enough Sony label on it. I wouldn't think twice about it there's a smaller item at the top that slides around freely. The bulk of the weight seems stationary but whatever is moving is still a concern.
Before I open the box I'd like to know if this is normal and if I should expect an undamaged unit inside. Does anyone have experience with these all brown boxes that have something shifting around inside? AC adapter in a separate, smaller box?
Thanks guys

Mate, just open the box?

Normally stuff in the box is very carefully all placed, so that it doesn't mopve about. That is to say that it has a load of polystyrene around it, and random cavities are filled by small cardboard bits. If it is rattling, don't worry, its probably just somethings come a bit loose. Open the box and enjoy your notebook.

My sz360p came in a brown box also.
I did not shake it before opening... but if I remember correctly the AC Brick was not secured down. At least I don't remember it being...
The laptop itself is secured in the lower half of the box w/ small cardboard bits to maintain its stability. The upper half of the box is the AC Brick and some pieces of paper from sony. I'm guessing its the brick. I see no way the laptop can slide unless the cardboard is damaged. The battery if I recall correctly is secured in the upper half it its own section. (I just got my sz360 1 week ago... maybe they all come in brown boxes now cuz of cost) -
The SZs come in brown boxes instead of those "fancy" black/blue boxes if you bought a customized version, which in the case of the SZ340, it is....

Thanks for the replies everyone. I can finally close that buy.com return policy window.
