I'll wager that everyone has a recommendation; however, your criteria are both subjective and potentially conflicting.

    Nevertheless, here is mine.

There is no combination that is the best.

I like hehe299792458's suggestion. I use ZA and AVG myself.

AVG antivirus, Windows Defender, Windows Firewall. Minimum lag.

EDIT- An Internet Security suite will meet those needs, but it may take up some resources.

dude, i think you should try out 'norton internet security 2008'
you can download the trial before buying it.
i mean, norton is the king. forget about all those junk free apps.
you shud be amazed to know that norton 2008 just got 80% faster
than the 2006 version. instead of downloading 10 or more free
security apps that doesnt even get the job done... nis2008 is a trooper.
it does everything for you. you dont have to worry about anything else.
you even get no more prompts asking for permission to allow or block a program.
nis2008 does all the hard work. its like its working in stealth mode.
you can get it for 40 bucks a maybe even cheaper if you know where to look
you can also install on maximum 3 computers. your license is even transferable
meaning all you have to do is uninstall it from one computer before
    transfering/installing it on another/new computer

I'll never use Norton again. I've been given numerous free, full-version copies of all of their software, and none has impressed me.

Of the retail Internet security suites that I have been given copies of, ZA, CA and a distant McAfee are the only ones that I used for any length of time.

I've seen continued to use ZA, because I like to have complete control, and have given a few copies of CA to family and friends.

To be fair, I have not tried Norton Internet Security Suite 2008. It really could only improve (take that for what it is worth, and as it was intended).

ZoneAlarm Security Suite is still missing function on Vista compared to itself on XP.

nanaki, if you can put me on your list so that next time you receive free security software suites you can maybe hook me up or something. you feeling me bro.

now back to the question. well norton as been sloppy in the past but i rhink they are getting back to their element now. i honestly think they've really done a good job with their 2008 line of products. but i understand your position. they've dissappointed alot big time in the past. just give 2008 a try maybe that will change your mind...

i think there is a review somewhere that even claims their 2008 line is generally and currently faster than every other product out there. really, norton is the king!

I gave up on Norton not due to speed specifically, but rather due to the brain dead updating processes and the persistence of the nagging to renew, months before expiration. I guess I got out before the speed problems manifested themselves.

i for one will never use norton or mcafee products every again. they are both resource hogs, and near to impossible to remove. if you want free antivirus, AVG and Avast are both good, if you're willing to pay for antivirus, NOD32 is the best.

avg antispyware is great, and so is adaware and spybot search & destroy.

I am using Nod32 / Spyware Search & Destroy / Windows Defender on my Vaio TZ. I have been using Nod32 on all my laptops for a couple of years now and would never use anything else. Overhead is virtually nil compared to the pile of sludge that is Norton.

I only use Norton on one of my machines because I hate to give up a 18mo use...

but for my Sony I use Windows Defender, AVG Free Anti virus, AVG free spyware and Windows Firewall seem to do the job.

for the guy who doesnt want to give up 18months subscription you are eligible for free upgrade to the latest version during your subscription period. so that means you can use your product key to activate the 2008 ver. you are free to upgrade if you want to. i will sure like to know what your opinion is on the 2008ver. trust me i am no norton junkie. i hate norton with everything within me but i just think they deserve a second chance. try the 2008 and lets see... dont forget u can transfer your license well thats if you r impressed

if you try it and still disappointed then i rest my case!

Norton Internet Security is responsible for more tech support problems on laptops than any other single program I could name. It was the first thing I removed from my Vaio.

I've tested the following scanners on a 1MB .exe file:
    Antivir Personal Edition
    Avast Home Edition
    NOD32
    Spybot Search & Destroy
    McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007
    Norton Internet Security
    AVG Free
    Spyware terminator
    Spybot Search & Destroy

They all failed. My system got infected. (even though most of them notice the treat). http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=170458

I have pretty much the same setup as hehe299792458.

Nod32, ZA, but Spybot for spyware instead of avg.

watch out for symantec endpoint security out at the end of this month...

they have the symantec AV, antispyware, firewall and IPS (not the internet security one.. its actually the efficient sygate firewall they got when buying the company), application and device control, plus NAC. All this and it uses less RAM and CPU then the existing symantec AV.

Should be an interesting product line.
