Use Windows Movie Maker (which comes default with Windows XP). You can record clips and save them. Its pretty simple. I just tested it today.

I too happened to discover the Movie Maker thing by chance...I thought since the webcam was auto detected by my Skype and Yahoo, and Movie Maker has the capability to detect Videos, so ideally it should also detect it automatically. And it did... so well :)

Quality is stricty just do-able... no Canon S2IS type video. Good enough for short clips/casual video conferencing etc. Will be better if you have a good background lighting.

The default Sony install comes with a number of audio/video programs... I'll check to see if any of them (besides Movie Maker) can record video.
