If you have no time to spend on it: leave it at recovered factory settings. Deinstall everything which you don't need.
Windows 7 is working well on that machine and all drivers and apps are tailored by Sony to make the best of your hardware.

On the other hand, Windows 7 is outdated by now. Windows 10 is where the music plays. But do consider it may take you some time and effort.

I decided to do the BIOS hack and renew the software, probably will put in new SSDs as well.
Wouldn't want to go back - everything is working equal or better than on 7.

You can go with or without the BIOS hack, anyway you can check here how to do the clean install of Windows 10.

    thanks a lot guy!

any idea how i determine if its quad raid or dual raid and if i have sata 6 ssds -- ive got 512gb ssd model but not sure if its the slower or faster version....

also, any sorta firmware updates for loud fan noise?

any other mods or updates etc that are a MUST HAVE?

    lastly,

the vaio z -- do any of the models come with a quad core cpu or are they all just dual core?

what does the BIOS hack do? any benefits?

Hi aliensony, please give more details about your model.. Model number, bios version, SSD type and brand..?
There are tools to find out more, e.g. In Windows 7, control panel - system - performance information and tools - view and print performance and system information.

Raid info - enable raid configuration view in bios and reboot.

Thermal policy, there is a feature of Sony power management (app) (silence - balanced - power mode).

Bios hack: depending on your model, e.g.
    - Enable usage of latest Nvidia graphics drivers
    - Switch raid /ahci /IDE Mode
    - enable vt-d
    -...
