    Hi there,

I'd really like to get an SZ but the prices are pretty insane (at least for the specs I want). I'm thinking of getting a refurbished one. My question: is this a good idea? Does Sony have a good/bad track record with refurbs?

Also, this is the REFURB model I'm thinking of getting. Is it a good buy? SZ270P (1.83 core duo, 1 gb ram, 120 gb HD) for $1300 from PC Connection: http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?Sku=7290400

I'm really a newb with VAIO products, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

In my company we have lots of Sony SZ model, we order about 10-20 of them each month. They seem to have a higher failure rate compared to other brand that we got. Such as IBM, HP, Dell and Toshiba.

Most failures is due to their screen. Luckily we have 3 yrs warranty on all of them.

I wouldn't buy a refurshibed unit unless its got warranty.

My wife and I each got refurbished SZ370's within the last 2 weeks. So far they are perfect, but they only come with 90 day warranty. Considering whether or not but buy an extended or not.

I guess it depends on the vendor that you're getting the refurb from... Recently we bought one HP dv8000 and one dv9000 at Fry's (for a couple of guys that work in the field so they didn't really need anything cutting edge) that were refurbs and the first one we powered up booted and looked like it was confinguring and upon reboot it died... The next one lasted about a week before the HDD died. The three lessons I learned were: 1] never buy a refurb, 2] never buy a laptop from Fry's, 3] Stay away from HP.

Thanks for your replies! If I do get this laptop I'll definitely be getting the 3 years warranty with it...

Personally, I would rather go for this one.

Not only is it new, but you can add the memory yourself easily. Comes with XP Pro, which entitles you to Vista Business whenever you feel like upgrading (but it must be purchased before March 15 to qualify for the Express Upgrade)
