I am reading the various threads about how to go about performing a Windows 7 clean install. I see and understand the requirements to load the Sony 'platform' drivers to get the various custom hardware working.

but what about reinstalling the original applications? Particularly some of the custom VAIO apps?

Here are some I'd like to see:
    VAIO Control Center
    DSD Direcet Player
    VAIO PC Wireless LAN Wizard
    WinDVD BD for VAIO
    VAIO Help and Support
    Wireless Switch Setting Utility

quite honestly, I don't think you'd have any issues installing these apps. Actually, I didn't install any of those, since Windows could handle pretty well all the connectivities (wi-fi, bluetooth).

For the video players, windows media 12 plays almost everything (but there is vlc too)

I performed an in-place upgrade from Vista-64 to Win7-64. The first step of the process was that it uninstalled all of the Sony apps. Win7 was then installed. After Win7 was installed, I had to insert the 2nd disc which installed all of the drivers and Sony software.

edit: Oh, another side effect of upgrading to Win7... WinDVD for Vaio now works! From day-1 WinDVD crashed on Vista on my system.
