I'm looking to buy a new standard battery for this VPCZ1 but I keep finding less than reliable vendors.

Does anyone have a trusted source for a battery that won't set me on fire?

If it's not available at Sony's website then I don't know where
Aren't any available on ebay? I highly doubt anyone out there has the ability to manufacture counterfeit batteries if that's what you fear, the shape is so unique and the particular laptop is so rare no one would benefit from building them.

If it's very crucial because your own battery has burned out I have a spare I'm willing to let go off

If you live in the USA you can order either the standard battery or extended batteries for discontinued laptops directly from Sony at this number 1-239-768-7691.

I recently got batteries from TechRover (not original Sony, but do not require BIOS updates like most other replacement batteries) for my VGN-Z (previous generation Z). They both (6- and 9-cell) work fine. You will need to look up the model numbers though (mine were VGP-BPS12 and VGP-BPL12; usually only the number changes).
