I have a VGN-S5HP and the HDD is well and truly kapput.

    1) Windows does not boot, instead I get "Disk read error, press CTRL+ALT+DEL", then a loop.
    2) BIOS sees drive
    3) Windows Recovery console (from another Windows XP cd), used "MAP", and it sees the 3 partitions, but letters are all messed up and in wrong order - I had C and D each of about 40GB each on an 80GB drive, plus the 7GB restore partition. Now it shows C: as 7GB, E: as one of the 40GB and a "?" for the thrid partition.
    4) The built in restore function does not work (F10)
    5) Cannot delete or format partitions from Recovery Console using DISKPART.
    6) have also tried FIXMBR etc...

It is about 3 years old and has already been back to sony to have a replacement drive - that time I was charged a fortune. This time around, I'm going to do it myself.

I have found the excellent guide here: http://home.comcast.net/~dan2804/nws/sonysupport.html

My question: I currently have an 80GB SATA-I, 5400RPM drive. I want to up it a bit. Anyone know if will take a 7200RPM SATA-II drive of about 160GB?

    Thanks.
