I use a Sony Viao SZ3 and want to change the fan and hard drive.

Can anyone suggest a replacement fan which performs better in terms of cooling and makes less noise?

can anyone suggest a replacement the hard drive which does not adversely affect battery life, and preferably has the same (if not better) performance?

    Thanks.

first of all to keep battery life you have to choose a 5400rpm hard drive instead of 7200, I recommend you WD hd's

about the fan I don't know

7200 drives are much more efficient now than they were and most will not drain your battery any more than an older 5400. There are TONS of good discussions on HDD's in the hardware forum, I would suggest you look over there and research a little. WD, Hitachi, Samsung, Seagate all make good, and sometimes, bad drives. Depends on what is important to you as to what you should pick (speed, capacity, energy savings, etc). On the fan, I don't know either - the only thing I ever change on a laptop is a HDD or memory.

Tom's Hardware includes power consumption in its 2.5" HDD charts. There's idle power and maximum power. Avoid the HDDs with high power consumption. Fujitsu is one brand not mentioned above and which usually produces HDDs with below-average power consumption. Make sure yet get the right interface (PATA / SATA).

I can't help with the CPU fan. You might want to remove the heat sink, clean everything and refit using Arctic Silver or similar compound to ensure optimum heat transfer.
