Long story short - got into a pretty serious car accident (car completely totaled, though thankfully I wasn't seriously injured) - but my SR's screen is malfunctioning. I'm not even bothering to send it in to Sony since my warranty doesn't cover physical damage, but since I did pack my laptop relatively well, it's all working except the screen - so I'm looking have the screen replaced.

Is there a way to tell which screens are compatible with it other than looking for the exact model on the screen? I'm afraid that since this is a new laptop, the screen model won't be in stock at many places, so I was kind of thinking of using an older model's screen for it. Would a 13.3" WXGA LED backlit screen from a SZ work in the Vaio SR? (i.e. have they made any drastic changes to screen thickness & technology between the SZ and the SR?) What exactly should I be looking for when ordering the screen to make sure it's compatible?

If any SR owners know the exact screen model, that would be greatly appreciated as well. I forgot to check what it was before sending the laptop off with my dad to take care of the repair.

Many thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer!

=\ I rent, so I don't have homeowner's insurance, unfortunately and my auto insurance doesn't cover this either. I'm thinking after I get this fixed, I'm gonna insure my laptop with SafeWare, but in the meantime, I'm looking for a cheaper option to replace my screen than what Sony is offering.

Do you have Amex? Did you buy your SR with an amex? If so, it's possible that you can get some sort of protection with it... check it out

Another option is to contact PortableOne or another small operation that deals with Sony laptops/fixes them. I'm sure Ivan of P1 will be very helpful. The problem is, from what i understand about laptops, is that LED LCD's are quite expensive and it might cost you upwards of several hundred dollars to replace the screen...

I would attempt to contact sony and see if you can get it covered under your warranty... ehh, im sorry man, it's really unfortunate that your car and laptop have been damaged. Hope your all right as well!

Good luck and hopefully everything is replaced/recovered in one way or another

Yeah, but I figure that maybe $350-400 for a replacement screen from Screentek (or a hopefully cheaper one on eBay) is still better than the $700 that Sony quoted me. =\ Do you think P1 would charge lower rates than Sony? At least it's better than having to buy a completely new laptop, I guess.

Heh. Interestingly - my POS $500 Toshiba Satellite, also in the car with me, came out completely unscathed. I even dropped it on the floor after arriving home and it's still working like a champ. I was going to recycle/trade it in, but I think I might just keep it given its resilience under stress - car accident, multiple plane rides up in the carry-on compartments - and still going strong. XD

    Thanks
