I bought a Sony Vaio VGN-AR270 from my brother-in-law. It's working great except that the Shift and Spacebar are failing at times. My wife and I are both keyboard-pounders, so that's likely the culprit.

I checked out the disassembly manual at http://home.comcast.net/~nw_systems/VGN-AR.pdf
and it doesn't seem like a terrible thing to replace.

On the other hand, $15 might get me a new USB keyboard. We don't haul the thing around a lot, so...

I noticed there's no AR owner's forum. Is it because of the age of the machine? How old would you say this machine is?

A new keyboard will cost you $40 and a little bit of time to replace. I'd go that route. Although if you don't move it about, a USB keyboard will be cheaper and the keyboard will be better. If you ever intend on selling it, you should replace the keyboard since the value drops if anything is wrong with it.
