Yesterday my VGN-S150 started acting up when I pressed the power button. When I push it, I can see that the computer has started powering up because the indicator lights on the front illuminate. However, my OS start up doesn't initiate. The screen remains black. So, I hold down the power button again to do a hard shut down. I then press the power button again at which time the Windows XP start up initiates.
Has anyone seen this? Why isn't my OS starting up on the first press of the power button? How do I address the issue?

Sorry Bonsai. Hit the archives. There is A LOT written on this. A LOT. But I say sorry, because your computer is dead. If you are lucky, you will get a few complete boot ups and maybe a few minutes of use. (Try removing the RAM and reseating them or switching them or removing half of a bank) If you are very lucky, you have a warranty. Otherwise, this is close to a $1000 repair by Sony. The archives will point to ROM issues, motherboard connections and all sorts of things. The bottom line though is that Sony is going to just replace the motherboard which is a $760 repair. Then if your video card is fried as well, you just go north of that. This is a well documented Sony issue from a few years ago and especially on the S-150. I am staring at mine now on my desk which I just replaced with an SZ after sending it to Sony twice for this exact issue and getting repairs. The third time it was not under warranty and they quoted me the $1000 tag. The good news is that your hard drive is not affected and your data is safe. Just back it up and transfer it to your new system. If you do a google search, there are a few companies that specialize in repairing this Sony fault. They tell you to stop booting immidiately and mail it in. How Sony avoided a massive recall on this or a class action is beyond me. This is a well documented and ignored fault with the older Vaio. Just ignore the little LED that is glowing, your computer is never going to consistently start again. Sorry.
