Hi guys
Can anyone help me i want to upgrade my SZ ram and it seems that S series ram is compatible. this would also mean after my upgrade to 2 1GB chips i could give my 512 ram to my dad for his vaio S.
any help you can provide would be most appreciated.
Also if anyone from australia knows where to get some good deals from please let me know
Thanks

sz series equip/shipped with "512MB PC-4200 533Mhz DDR2"
s series, for example : VGN-S560P use the same RAM as above.
better quote your model to find more info. -
RAM is always build in the same way, just with different speeds. Make sure your notebooks uses the same speed as the s series.

thanks for your replies
mine is the SZ 18 = SZ 160
so a33 you think i should be fine my laptop specs say 512MB DDR2 SDRAM?
thanks phil i am pretty sure both use 533 mhz which is good news.
thanks again and if anyone has more info please let me know -
Interesting discussion. Is there a benefit to runnning faster RAM than 533 mhz?
-
sz 18 (hk version) = Infineon PC4200 DDR2 533MHz should works fine with your other S series. For more info, what model is your S series
-
The faster the RAM, the quicker your program runs (if it actually does some RAM stuff, like a database or a game I think)
The faster the RAM, you might have the surprise: the sooner your battery goes bye-bye -
hey a33
ironically enough my dads S is S18 but ithink you are right they should be compatible, just wasnt 100% sure, which is good news.
it is more benefical to have RAM run above 533, but like equinoxel mentioned this probably would have a drain on your battery but it shoudnt be too noticeable.
plus reading around in other threads it seems the SZ doesnt currently support above 533 due to its BIOS which sucks
thanks for your help guys...ill let you know how it goes...just gotta find some RAM and wait for it to arrive -
The SZ is a 667MHz bus, but you're right - it seems to be crippled by its BIOS if it can only really use 533.

Sony Vaio VGN S18GP ?(centrino 1.6M,60G,512MB,13.3",1.89kg)
if yes, sorry---> it use "Micro-DIMM "
which is different from SZ !
you just cann't take the RAM from SZ & put into the S.(slot size is small) -
oh ****....thanks a33, saved my dad hoping for a free RAM upgrade
well im looking at getting corsair 1GB comes with lifetime warranty and a respectable brand
http://www.techbuy.com.au/products/...hz)_Value_Select_200-pin_SO-DIMM_DDR2-RAM.asp
should be right..?
i will call them before i order anyway so they understand if it isnt compatibale they will take it back i dont want to be stuck with the 2GB and out $300 -
To confirm further, you can just open the both notebook's RAM covers to compare the size (without taking the RAM out).
well, most people go for upgrade to 667MHz ($$$$),even the BIOS....
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4779979?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
add one 512MB ($) is not enough for your applications?
on the other hand, you don't get an extra homeless 512MB! -
well do you think sony will fix this bios restriction because i dont want to have to spend more money on 667MHZ RAm if the laptop isnt even gonna take advantage of it...
yeh i am still waying up my options i might even just get 1x 512MB or the 2 x 1GB.
if the 512 can goto my dad...ill double check like you suggested to open it up and compare then ill boost up to 2GB if not maybe just to 1GB
i was just thinking if i am gonna upgrade it i may aswell go all the way
512 isnt sufficient as i dvelop programs fairly often 1GB would be necessary as a minimum to keep the great speed it has now. -
Get the Mushkin 2x1GB pack from Newegg. Stuff is flawlwss and didn't break the bank.
S and SZ RAM the same??
