i am sure a lot of you, like me, are debating between the two models so i thought we could do a head to head comparison.
differences as i see it are:

    1. ATA vs SATA HDD
    2. No wimax option vs. wimax
3.black (carbon) vs.silver colored casing (mag alloy?)
    4. better cooling vs. std. cooling system
    5. 13.3 vs 14 screen
    6. 6400 card vs. x700
    7. no camera vs. camera option

isnt the bx then worth waiting for?

also , does wimax work in roaming, in other countries as well where there are EDGE networks? any idea of costs?

    S has a Sata HDD
S black is magnesium (i would prefer carbon, prol lighter and stronger)

Is the BX quite a bit larger? I don't think they are intended for the same market primarily.

get the BX. I was basically sold solely on the x700 on a 14.1 in laptop, but I couldn't wait for sony's new lineup cuz of school and I didn't really think they would release something this good.

Yeah, if the weight is roughly the same then I would go with the BX too. I like that Graphics engine...

S is about 1.2 lb lighter than 14.1 BX -- so BX is 25% heavier than S, since S weighs about 4.3 lb.

Carbon is probably too pricey at the level of refinement required for this notebook, the new TX gets carbon. I'm happy with magnesium.

What is afaik? Sorry but, S does have Sata. It has been Sata since the S380 first came out.

But again not worth comparing the two. For the BX there is other competition, same goes for the S. The major difference being the size. The BX will probably fair quite well in its weight class with those features just as the S fairs quite well in its weight class with the current features.

 1.2 lbs well spent!!! This is the most well balanced notebook yet on the market. Great gaming capabilities and still very portable.

    You forgot:
    S580 Widescreen vs BX-540 4:3

BX has a widescreen once it hits 15.4" Screens or higher

That sucks. Why even bother with a 14" 4:3 anymore? If they did a wxga in the BX-540, then it would be worth considering for me.

It may not be widescreen, but it has a relatively hi-res SXGA+ (1400x1050) screen. Don't forget that it's still XBRITE and not that dim normal stuff.

Remember, having a widescreen is still considered a luxury. Although it's nice to have it, its not mandatory to run your programs at a 16:9 resolution. As a matter of fact, since the majority of games are still designed for 4:3 in mind, some (certain games have better res scaling than others) might appear to be stretched and out of porportion regardless if it supports your LCD's native res. So, I ask. What's so good about 16:9 other than the possibility of playing your widescreen DVDs fullscreen?

The BX series better not be build using the same cheap materials as the B series. Horrible.

The 14" has the magnesium alloy casing. I can't say for the other models though...

16:9 is closer to the golden ratio. Even if you don't watch movie, still you are looking at an image.(your desktop..)
It is nicer to look at a wide screen.

Also I think it is easier to develop/work on a wide screen. (you can arrange your toolboxes in a nice way. -vs.net, borland builder etc-)
