I can't tell you how pleased I am with the s170P. for those considering this computer you will not be disapointed. The speed is fantastic and screen is awesome. The only thing I can say negative about this computer is that it's hard to see the keys in low light situations- however i fixed this buy purchasing a belkin USB light that clips perfectly on the top of the screen and it has a retractable power cord and an on/off switch and doesn't cause any real drain on the battery. The battery life with no power saving features turned on is really good- i can burn cds and surf for well over 3.5 hours with the screen on full bright and that's with the regular battery.

Good to hear.
I haven't heard from anyone who has been disappointed by the S170 yet. -
Whoa...that's great! I'm going to get an S series in a week or two and I'm glad to hear that you're happy with it. If you could give any more review tidbits here and there, that would be great...thanks!

Have you tried any games?

Purchased S170 2 days ago from Sony, great screen! But that is where it stops. 1.7 Ghz 9700 chipset, 5400 80 gig drive 512 ram, yet not as fast as my V505EX 1.5 512ram 60 gig 4200 rpm, the mapping programs running side by side on each machine showed considerable difference 505EX faster. Built in bluetooth did not communicate as well as Linksys Bluetooth transmitter cat1. USB ports are poorly placed for Belkin retactable USB lite , Cable gets in way. Lacks DC periferal out port.

sorry to hear that you are not happy with the USB port locations. I really like where they are located- I have two digital cameras that I use (Nikon D70 and Sony DSC-W1) and I like that the USB ports are up in the right front of the machine because I don't have to spin the computer around all the time when connecting and disconnecting the wires. That is really interesting that the V505 is showing better marks- I can't dispute that. I find that my machine is very fast for what I am using it with- Photoshop and Office stuff. I haven't played any games so I can't give any good info on performance there. The start up of the computer seems real fast to me. Hope you find a way to make your S170 go faster than your V505. Rick

Iagree w/ you the front USB ports are handy, I think the could have had at least one towards the rear, though still on the side. I don't really understand why the V505 is marginally faster than the S170, but for the $ differential between the two machines I expected a better performance. Glow in the dark(luminescent) keys would be great for low light

I'm amazed that you've found the S to be slower than your V505.
I would suggest you look at your antivirus software and other programs that are loaded on startup on the S. Are you running the same version of Windows XP and same version of antivirus program on both machines? Norton AntiVirus 2003 and 2004 can really slow things down. (AVG and Avast! are a couple of free antivirus alternatives.)Other S owners have improved their performance by removing or disabling unnecessary background programs.
If you search, you also can find plenty of sites that have tweaks and lists of Windows XP Services you can safely disable to improve performance (and security). -
