    DEAD IN THE WATER!

I've had my S170 since the end of July and I have been very happy with it up until now. The fan noise doesnt' bother me and I've liked the features and performance.

My problem is now with Sony's support process, as this past Sunday I had a failure that ended up with Sony's deciding to replace both the hard drive and the motherboard!

When I tried to bring the machine out of hybernation it couldn't complete the operation. I had to power down, but when it tried to reboot, I could only get it into safe mode - with networking, thank goodness. I got all my data off and then spent two hours on the phone with Sony troubleshooting until they finally decided it had to be hardware and ordered the parts to be shipped to the local repair vendor.

That's where the trouble really started. I purchased the 3 year onsite support contract (at a hefty price in July. Now it's less expensive) Although the parts were in NY by Tuesday, my repair appointment wasn't scheduled until Thursday. The repairman was 2 hours late and then discovered that the motherboard was not in the box!

So now I wait for them all to get their acts together to get parts, people and time in synch. I was hoping to spend the weekend restoring all my software, but that seems a longshot now.

Anyone else out there have experiences with the repair service? Any info on who I can write to to complain? There's not much more I can do to improve the current situation, but maybe I can prevent others from experiencing pain.

You probably had done it already, but I am still interested to know: did you format the HDD then re-install the OS after you back up all the data?

Really, I'd just be happy that you got the on-site service, no matter how bad it was/is. Who knows what the turnaround time would've been if you had to send it in.

Hi, I purchased a VGN-S260 in December and I just noticed that the battery indicator light stops blinking when the battery is 85% charged but the battery is still charging. I don't think it used to do that but I'm not sure. I spoke with some sony tech guys and they said they don't know whats going on because it's only suppose to stop charging at 85% when there's a second battery but this notebook only support 1 battery. According to the manual, it says that the indicator is suppose to stop blinking when the battery is fully charged. The tech guys had me talk to one of their engineering people leave me a message and they pretty much said that this is normal. Is there something wrong with my notebook? I also tried swapping the battery with another notebook but it does exactly the same thing so I know it's not a problem with the battery and I did a complete restore on the computer so I know it's not a software thing either.
    Thanks for your time guys.

I posted this earlier in another topic before I found this one so I'm sorry for the double post.
Since I now found this thread, do you guys have the same problem?
