Tonight I noticed the right side of the screen is apparently darker than other area, the righter the darker...
Don't know if anyone ever encountered this, my guess is that the light under that lcd must has some kind of problem.
It is going to be Christmas and my little s type just broke up...

Hello. i got a s460 in Sept 2005 and last week developed the same problem, ive got the added problem i bought mine while i was in the states and sony in the UK are refusing to honour the warranty, although they did offer to fix it for 300-500 POUNDS (apparently they said its a screen and not a back light issue), if youve had any other info would appreciated finding out how you got on.

Hi wpuk, i think there is a reduced warranty for US models in europe for 6month. otherwise you can ship it to a friend in the US and have it repaired over there under warranty.
-
Hello, cheers for the info but from Sony UK they will have nothing to do with any sony products regardless of warranty status if they were bought outside the UK (sorry bit misleading they will happily fix it and charge you full whack for it),
they even wanted to charge me 12 pound fifty pence ($20) for abit of phone support which lasted 4 minutes not including the time they had me on hold).
Im stuck sending it back to the states as i have no poc there.
This is getting away from the thread though, im trying to compile info for if i do manage to ship it back to tech support in the US so as to minimise the amount they can screw me over (just going off my experiances with sony UK)
Ive confirmed its not a backlight issue with sony UK tech support
Ive confirmed its not software related by pluging in an external monitor which works as it should (no darkness on the right handside
All im left with is the LCD screen on the notebook is goosed. -
Did you select the Vaio Overseas Service for your notebook? If not, maybe you can add this option now, though I'm not sure you can once the purchase has been made.
Check this out if you're interested:
Service

The terms and conditions of the service are described in the document "More information on VAIO® Overseas Service". The term of the service is one year from the date of purchase of the VAIO® PC from Sony VAIO authorized distribution.

It will take in average 2 weeks from the time you first call Sony to request a repair. However, depending on the nature of problem, the time needed to repair your Product could be more than 2 weeks due to spare parts logistics -
Cheers will look into it.

same problem here
bought my vaio-VGN SZ430 6 months back from the states
right one third of the LCD screen -replaced by vertical lines
sony support- absolutely unhelpful
issue 1- outside warranty- they claim it is physical damage (i have not had any accidents with my notebook) nor can I notice any actual physical crack or damage on the screen other than these vertical lines and a black patch- which I am told is due to leakage of fluid
issue 2- no international support- this model not available in europe (I would have thought for a portable device and with increasing number of globe trotters- sony would be more helpful in support). they are quoting aprox £500.00. I beleive this is a problem with sony monitors as well
-I was planning to send it back to my friend in US- but sony in US say this will cost- which is ridiculous
any suggestions- ?consumer legal challenge re sony product
S460 LCD problem,help!
