I've used Crucial for my Thinkpads in the past.

However they are $146 for 1GB, while Buy.com has Viking for $113. And I'm getting a bunch of other accessories (port rep, spare A/C & battery) at Buy.com.

Is Viking OK or should I pony up for the Crucial?

    Thanks

Well, crucial seems to always be a good company to buy ram from. I bought 1gb from them for my sony s570 (which I returned, gonna buy s580 soon) and it seemed to work fine. However, Crucial recently raised their prices (at least on the 1gb ones) from like $135 to $160 (before sale).

    But check this out: http://www.fatwallet.com/t/18/536271/

Newegg has transcend 1gb memory with samsung chip for 83-10=around 73 dollars. Half the price of crucial. I just ordered another 1gb so I can install them when I get my s580.

That ram should be fully compatible with the sony s4xx and s5xx series (correct me if I'm wrong guys). It has the same specs as the one I got from Crucial. If you read the threads on fatwallet you'll see some feedback on the ram.

    Good luck!

I've been running Transcend memory for a couple of months now. I picked mine up from Newegg when it was twice the price! The first stick I ordered was bad but the next two were fine. One of the sticks has Micron memory (same stuff Crucial uses...Micron owns Crucial).

When you say bad ram, does that mean it just totally doens't work or is it just decreased performance? Is there software out there that you can run to test your RAM? If so, which ones do you recommend?

If you don't have a gamer's boutique laptop, just get generic RAM. If it's compatible and everything works perfectly, keep it. If not, return it for a refund. It's just as easy as that.

I believe I ran Memtest. The RAM failed after running the test for a few hours. From what I was told most people would be OK with that. I just requested an RMA and got a replacement stick. No problems since.

Right. Kingston ValueRAM is a nice choice if you are going for decent memory, and it's not that much either.

What will happen if I have already had a 512M on board and add another 1G?
I was told it won't be as efficient as having 2 512M.
