There are two optional adapters with Bluetooth support. I'm getting the 802.11a/b/g/BT adapter, but there's also an 802.11b/g/BT adapter available (plus two 802.11-only adapters). Does anyone here know whether the optional Bluetooth adapters support Bluetooth 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, or 2.0?

Do you know whether they are Class 2 (10m/2.5mW) or Class 1 (100m/100mW) devices? I assume they must be Class 2, but can anyone confirm this or find corroborating documentation?

Do you know what chipset? Broadcom/Widcom?

    Thanks,

    Songdog

Regardless of the Wifi option you choose the bluetooth adaptor is on a separate daughter board, despite the fact that sony makes it look like one unit in their pricing.

I have the UK models S2XP and S5XP, which are almost equivalent to S270 and S580 bar differences like the keyboard, but are certainly identical when it comes to the components inside.
    The S2XP has BT1.2, and S5XP BT2.0
Both modules look identical but the part number is incremented by one on the BT2.0 version.
It is safe to assume that S580 will have BT2.0 unless sony USA is customising theirs using left over 1.2 modules.

I have ripped both computers apart just to see inside, and both BT modules are made by ALPS i.e. ALPS chipset.

Yes I have the UK models, but rest assured the US versions have the same adaptors. No doubt about it.

    They are class 2.

see pictures here. he upgrades another model of vaio but they all use the same modules.

Thanks, Jigar, that's good to hear (and your link is great!). I don't intend to take mine apart except to add memory, but I should at least be able to confirm the BT version of my S580 when it arrives.

By the way, have you tried a Bluetooth mouse with either of your Vaios? Some newer mice are using 1.2 instead of 1.1, but I don't know if any take advantage of 2.0. I'd love to find one which eliminates lag, but so far I haven't found one that gets consistently good reviews. The Logitech v270 sounded good at first, but no longer. I'm still hunting!

I'm syncing my hx4705 over BT. I will try to remember the steps I took to getting it working.
