Hey, I'm sorry if this has already been covered before somewhere on this board but I am curious as to how the VAIO S580's customization options impact it's heat output and weight. Keep in mind that I am planning on switching to a VAIO from a behemehoth of an 11 pound Sager N3790 Desktop replacement. So I guess I would simply like to know if:

-Would choosing the NVidia video option over the integrated video option noticeably effect heat output and weight?

-Would choosing the Intel M 760 (2ghz) over the S740 noticeably effect heat output and weight?

-Would choosing the longer lasting battery noticeably effect the overall weight of the laptop?

    Any help is greatly appreciated

-Would choosing the NVidia video option over the integrated video option noticeably effect heat output and weight?

Yes, I have two S580's one with integrated and one with the NVidia video. The NVidia option causes the CPU and machine to run a couple of degrees warmer. The fan cycles more with the NVidia video. I don't have access to the NVidia model at the moment to upgrade the BIOS to the new version so I can't tell you if it will run any cooler. Just taking a guess I would say yes since the fan seems to be turning on at a lower temp but at a extremely reduced speed (quiet). I'll be able to check it out this weekend when I get back from a business trip. As far as weight is concerned there isn't any appreciable difference.

-Would choosing the Intel M 760 (2ghz) over the S740 noticeably effect heat output and weight?

Yes and no, at idle any PM CPU will run at 800 MHz (unless power management is throttling the bus speed) so the heat will be the same regardless. Once you start surfing or doing anything on the machine the CPU speed will ramp up to meet demand. Since the 760 has a higher ceiling the CPU has a potential to ramp to 2GHz versus 1.73 for example. That extra few GHz will cause the CPU temp to spike a little higher on the faster CPU. It's subtle, but nevetheless it is noticeable. There isn't any weight difference.

-Would choosing the longer lasting battery noticeably effect the overall weight of the laptop?

Yes, I believe the extra capacity battery is about 50% heavier than the standard battery.

Thanks a bunch, I think I'm going to go with the NVidia option because I don't think anything can get as hot/loud as the Radeon 9700 256mb that's running in my current laptop...
