I was just on sonystyle.com and I tried to add an S580 to my cart and got this message: The configuration you have chosen is not available.
I changed four things from the default configuration. I upgraded to:
-512MB RAM (512x1)
-NVIDIA GeForce Go 6400 with TurboCache
-Pentium M 760 2.0GHz
-80GB hard drive
I tried a couple of other configs, but kept getting the same message. It was only after I went with the default (Celeron) config., that it was added to my cart. Even then it said "production begins on or about Feb. 20."
What's up with that? Are they already phasing out the 580? They've taken the 560 and 570 on the site; is the 580 next?
Does anyone have any ideas about what's happening with the 580?

I guess they are phasing it out. I cancelled my order for an s580 a week ago and the only thing that was out of stock at the time was the screen which gave it a production date of feb 20th.
-
Oh yeah, aren't they phasing it out for the dual core SZ series?
-
Phasing it out for the SZ series makes sense; I assumed this would happen, but I was hoping to buy a S580 before it was completely phased out. Foiled again!

Well, it's official. After continually trying to order online (I enjoy bashing my head against a wall), I called Sony and they told me the S580 has been discontinued; they just haven't gotten around to removing it from their website.
Oh well. I think I'll wait for the upcoming 13.3" Apple iBook Core Solo (assuming it's not just a rumor). I just can't bring myself to buy a dual core notebook at this point--at least not until they're 64-bit--and Sony's SZ with the T1300 is too expensive (though Apple's may be as well).
S580 availability?
