Hi guys, I am TOTALLY NEW to this board. First post ever and just got my s58GP about a month ago and YET ALREADY HAVE PROBLEMS!! I hope its just me being unlucky since sony is a very reputable brand i guess...
anyways, a few things, my notebook will not shut down... after i press shutdown, the computer simply idles. does nothing, will not let me start anything. Whenever i try to start program it says cannot start application during the shut down process... and then after a while a CCAPP.EXE error MAY occur maybe not. and it just does nothing and i have to shut it down by holding the power button...
Second, the power meter will not display. The box that says display icon in the tray bar or something is CHECKED! but it still will nto display. If i am luckly, go there unclheck the box, apply, and then check the box again, and apply, the meter MAY show. Thats only if I am lucky...
Third thing is that the same thing happens to the volume control thing on the system tray... it will not display.. and even if I uncheck the "show icon on system tray" box, apply, check it again, and then apply, it still will not display..
Last thing, sometimes (about 33%) when I turn on the computer, my norton antivirus gets problem and shuts down (the program only) immediately..
The norton I am using is 2006. its internet security 2006. I have updated to bios to Version 3 or something. Its suppose to be the newest one.
I have also searched over google about the CCAPP error, I have disabled Norton's check up on floppy drive when shut down, cleared all the temporary internet files, and ran live update over 7 times in 2 days so i believe it should be very up to date...
I am very confused right now.. I spent 3000 USD for this computer... I don't want it to go waste because I do need a very stable computer for my work and ESPECIALLY when I am making important presentation...
Please give me a hand you experts there... I would greatly appreciate it..
Oh, BTW, I have emailed sony support 3 days ago and they havn't got back to me yet... so I guess maybe my email went to the junk box?
Thanks everyone.

Your system not shutting down means there is some programm or task blocking it from doing so. My guess is, as you've been having problems with Norton anyway, that it's the Symantec software causing your problems. I know uninstalling Norton Internet Security is a major thing (I've had to do it on mine and it took ages) but try that.
You can also try booting in safe mode (Press F8 when the system is booting) and see if the notebook will turn off regular from there, the volume icon is present, etc. If this is the case it's definitely a software issue and I would get rid of Norton Internet Security or contact Symantec support. Lots of people have been having problems with Norton especially the newer version, alas the 2005 edition runs fine on my S5 though -
Bomfunk,
Thanks a lot for replying me. I am not sure what is it thats causing the problem, but i have decided to do the system restore as I will have a very important presentation next week. Just wanna make sure everything goes fine before that. I understand that that internet security 2005 installs automatically while I setup the system. Is there any way that I can not install the Internet Security while I run the Recovery Utility provided by vaio?
Thanks again for :
1, Replying me; and
2, USING THE S5 SERIES! (seems like most people are using the SZ series now)
Thanks

Your Welcome
There is no way to stop installing Norton Internet Security 2005 when using the recovery discs unfortunately. It will install all the junk you've already uninstalled once. But the preinstalled Norton 2005 worked fine for me, so if you do a complete system restore you should be good.
Hanging on to my S5 so long.. I don't feel like upgrading just yet, not too many dual core applications out there anyway.. There are probably still quite some S5 users here it's just that most problems with it seem to be solved
