    The SD card reader in my little TZ is really slow, when compared to every other laptop i've had experience using and also USB readers and also the reader built into the new Dell LCD i've just got...
    The transfer rates i'm getting and have seen are massively quicker than my poor TZ when copying over my photos/movie clips.

    Is the SD card reader used in the newer models (Z especially) still a slow one???

    TIA.

    Hard to compare what you consider fast/slow without knowing actual transfer times w/ small files and w/ large files. If you have tons of small files, then yes, it takes ages.

    It's not hard to compare, it's a lot slower.... Slower than other card readers/laptops... whatever you copy.

    So.

    Slow = 2.2MB/s vs. 17.0MB/s

    Ii use Breezesys' Downloader Pro, when it's first reading the card, it takes ages. Then when copying over the images (2-3MB each) and the movies (10s of MB) they only get about 2.2MB/s, say when copying a big 400MB movie clip, i.e. sustained transfer rate...
    On my Dell U2711 LCD, using it's built in card reader, Downloader Pro reads the card really quick... Then the same clip copies at about 17MB/s...

    I've noticed this when putting photos on my mate's AspireOne and other laptops, and when using the little USB SD card reader that came with the 8GB Sandisk Extreme III Class 6 card i'm using here...

    I've done literally hundreds of downloads (straight copies of the DCIM folders too) and the speed (or lack of) is exactly the same...

    Are the card readers in the newer VAIOs of the faster type?

    Does anyone else have a slow card reader in their TZ?

    I do not own a TZ, but a brand new Z12;

    It has a quite speedy sd/ms reader. Faster than 10Mb/s at ease.

    It is a ricoh pci-e model. Probably it has a lot to do with being internally pci-e and not usb wired.

    There has been even an update "adding compatibility for cards bigger than 32gb" and, I am not mistaken, it means SDXC compatible.

    Kudos for sony in this one.

    I would not think this is too good to be true since my older AR (4 years now), had a similar update to gain compatibility with SDHC (new in those days) and ms HG.

    If your reader is very slow, try with a different card, although I guess you already tried.

    Perfect!
    Cheers runavaio, that's just the answer i wanted. :)

    Yeah, many different cards and software have been used in the past with the TZ'd SD card reader... It's never been fast, ever. Hence it makes other laptop's readers very noticeably faster!

    Unless another TZ user can say otherwise, i'd guess the Ricoh SD chip is just a slow one... It's connected to the PCI bridge according to Device Manager, so i guess that's not the bottle neck...

    So i can now look forward to a fast reader when i upgrade to a Z one day

    I currently have the TZ195, TZ298, Z590 and Z12. I have never done a direct comparison, but I certainly haven't noticed the TZ's SD readers to be noticeably slower than that of the Z's or the MS readers. On the TZ's, only the MS can be used for ready boost, but I'm not sure that that really says about the SD reader, however.

    Last night I was copying a big file over wifi network (N class) from my NAS (gigabit ethernet) and was amazes as seeing it was being written to the memory stick at 22MB/s, it did not only show the card reader was fast, but also the wifi network was working super fast (160Mbps).

    Card in the reader was a Sandisk ProHG Duo Mark2 "ultra", rated at 30MB/s.

    Yes it is slow I made a thread about it year or so ago, was getting same speeds as you, think it is connected ot PCI bus so maybe use really bad controller, shame since the price of the lappy is so high, not sure why they bumb up the speed of the duo reader... :rolleyes: , getting 6-7mb/s on that..

    Bought an expresscard reader just for reading/writing sd cards, getting 19MB/s read and up to 18mb/s write on that, and that uses usb bus not pci-e
