    Model : SONY VAIO FS740/W

Operating System - Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service pack 3

DVD Drive - SONY DVD RW DW-Q58A
    Driver Provider - Microsoft
    Driver Date - 7/1/2001
    Driver Version - 5.1.2535.0
    DVD region - Region 1
Device status - This device is working properly.

When I insert any DVD ( original XP CD, empty DVD, empty CD, any movie, etc.), DVD drive tries to read the disk. I can hear the disk spinning and trying to read. After 3-5 seconds the spinning stops and the drive re-tries to read the disk again. This happen continuously until I remove the disk.

I can see the DVD-RW Drive icon in My Computer. I can Eject the DVD by right click -> Eject, on DVD drive icon in My Computer.

The DVD drive works properly. I tested it on other laptop that I have, K series SONY VAIO laptop.

Tried updating my firmware, Sony® DW-Q58A-VN Firmware Update, from http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNFS740W&upd_id=2349&os_id=7. I get an error "No Supported drive detected".

Tried fixing CD/DVD issues by deleting LowerFilters registry entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} from regedit. No luck.

Tried the fix provided by microsoft, http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems, for CD or DVD drive cannot read or write media support. still no luck.

    1) How can I fix this issue?
    2) Whre can I get latest version of SONY DVD RW DW-Q58A driver?
    3) When I try to install Sony® Click to DVD® Update - 2.4.12.14071, http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNFS740W&upd_id=2112&os_id=7, its asking me to install Sony® Click to DVD® - 2.3. Where can I get Sony® Click to DVD® - 2.3 driver?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you

Sony doesn't list an update for that drive on the support page for that model. Did you replace the OEM with this drive? And have you tried the registry patch for XP for CD/DVD drives on that model? Oh, and BTW, Click to DVD isn't a driver, it's a program, that unless you have your recovery DVD's to re-install the Click to DVD program, I don't think Sony offers it for download.

    @XGX2007 -
"Did you replace the OEM with this drive?"
    can you elaborate this more?

"have you tried the registry patch for XP for CD/DVD drives on that model?"
Are you suggesting solution at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems? Done that. No luck.
Also, updated windows start -> all programs -> Windows update. No luck.
Is there any other way for registry patch?

my "Click to DVD" quest was a long shot. I was hoping, by installing the software, it would recognize my drive :).

    @hendra -
No, it does not. it just tries to read the disk over and over. thats all it does.

    Thanks guys

I mean, did the drive you're having trouble with come with the notebook? Because it doesn't have an official firmware update for that drive listed, if it did come with that drive. A better question I guess would be, can you put a CD in and boot from a disk? If you can boot from a disk, it would narrow the problem down to something in XP is wrong. Also, if you can use Nero Info Tool, and pull some information from the drive and provide it here, we could help you more in depth...

If you already properly set up the BIOS to boot from the optical drive and if you already test the CD to boot from another computer, then the problem is your hardware, not software. It is possible that the connector in the motherboard is broken or loose.

"did the drive you're having trouble with come with the notebook? "
Yes, the DVD drive is the original drive that came with the laptop.

"can you put a CD in and boot from a disk?"
No, it does not read any CD/DVD either at bootup or in general.

    "Nero Info Tool"
Nero is what got me into this problem :). I was installing Nero burner and after restart the DVD drive just stopped working. After that I did a complete format and reinstall of XP. Still the problem continues.

Anyhow, I did download Nero InfoTool 5.3.3.0, and got info about the drive. I have attached information from under 3 tabs - Drivers, Drive and Disc. The information is when I have the original XP CD in the drive

    @hendra-
I have my BIOS setting bootup from optical drive. The original XP CD works, I tested it on another laptop, K series.

My DVD drive (has dvd write) works, I connected to other vaio laptop and it works.

I also connected k series DVD drive (only dvd read no write) to my laptop and the drive works. So, I am assuming it should not be the connector problem.

    Thanks guys

The only thing I can recommend after looking at the logs, and you say the drive does indeed work on another notebook... is a clean reformat and re-install of XP or Windows 7.

    Model : DELL INSPIRON 6400 - Centrino Duo 1.83 GHz - 4 GB Ram

    Driver Provider - Microsoft

    DVD region - Region 1

    Hi guys...

    Is this topic still on?

I had exactly the same problem after burning an MP3 CD with NERO 8 Burning Rom two days ago. The program was aborted at the middle of the process and the SONY DVD+-RW DW-Q58A drive stopped reading/writing any kind of CDs. It does read DVDs though.

I tried pretty much every step discussed here:

    1. Reeboot / Restart
    2. Delete Upper and Lower Filters
    3. DELL Diagnostics
    4. Update the Firmware
    5. Search for drivers
    6. Nero InfoTools attached

I guess the only steps I hesitated to do was to re-install Windows XP format the PC and get back to factory configuration. But before doing that I would like to know if it worked!

    Any help is appreciated!!!

Try getting rid of Nero. Sometimes it's the disk burning software that causes problems.
