I bought my Sony SZ series a while back on my trip to Japan. But whenever I try to do a driver update or upgrade it takes forever (24-36hours) and would often disconnect because it connects to the 'Asia Support Site'. (Downloads at around 3-4 kb/s) Is there anything else I can do? The Touchpad would often go everywhere as well and all over the screen and the only way to stop it is by pressing ctrl+alt+del.

The touchpad is a static issue.

Your dirvers - you could always go directly to the hardware manufacturer...

But cnnections to Japan should be stable - the internet is a "worldwide thing".

Static Issue!? How would I solve it? Randomly when I use it, it should go all over the screen (mainly the border of the screen) and right clicking everything.

Because I bought it from Japan it isn't supported here. I've tried looking for SZ drivers from US sites but it won't let me and it doesn't recognize my serial number. This forces me to go the Sony Asia which takes forever. (Even when just loading their site). My warranty is already up, I've had it for almost three years now.

Static issue - either ignore it - its rare for me or - there hve been threads on NBR - take the palmrest apart and cover the edge of the cutout for the keypad in tape...

Oh, I thought the touchpad issue was a driver that can be fixed through updates. Thank you. I've also tried some driver programs, but most of them offer a free scan to tell you that pretty much all your drivers are out of date, then make you pay to download them. I should be able to download off the Sony US site!

You could try one of the european sites... but then the driver will not recognize the model :(

Bythe way - newer drivers aren't a neccessity if yours work well - the only exception being graphics drivers where performance may be increased.

The static issue - that's the touchpad - is due to the aluminium palmrest - if it were plastic it wouldn't happen...or if the touchpad were isolated from the palrest...

By the way - "your condition" helps too.

I had it quite often when lying in bd with the laptop next to me on a little drawer - but not on my desk - I think if you are electrostatically charged it gets worse :(

    LOL alrighty
Just another question, does your SZ get really really hot and loud? Casually using my SZ for maybe Word Documents or surfing the net can get my system heating up. I've tried blowing out the dust but it's still getting real hot and loud.

Thank you Rachel, I will try it this weekend and get back to you! Hopefully that will solve my three year erratic mouse problem.

No. It got quite warm on speed mode - back when I first got it, I played World In Conflict - the fan was running on full :D - but nowadays I use Stamina all the time and it stays quite cool :)

Maybe you should take the flaps off and then blow away dust?

On 'Stamina' with a few apps running it gets fairly hot. Furthermore, my hardrive is almost as loud as my CD-drive when it's running. (It has been three years, but is this normal?)Flaps? As in the casing? I've never done it before and don't want to risk breaking something just so I can get my notebook to run cooler. How would I go about doing that safely?

Yes, I mean the little lids in the casing on the bottom - just take screwdriver, unscrew them an lift them out.

But first make sure you disconnect the battery and AC supply, you may want to earth yourself too at least once at the beginning.

    Don't touch any smal cmponents.
You can touch the heatsink and fan - you may want to keep the fan from spinning while blowing air/gas through the vents (from inside to the ouside) - use a smal screwdriver or toothpick.

Is really a "try out" - bascally stop the moment you feel uncomfortable - that's the best advice I can give you.

Very hot under stamina just sounds wrong.

And loud HDD - that's bad - maybe you want to replace your HDD - you can use this programme to check up on the HDDs SMART data, but this is only an indication - so, if it says "good" the dive could still fail the next day as DD failures aren't fully understood or so it seems...
