And HDMI out, slot-loaded drive, ability to spec 160GB/7200rpm drives, no crapware, no pre-partitioned hard disk, etc.

No HDMI is disappointing, but the others shouldnt be a negative against the SZ.

I am no fan of slot-loaded, as it can sometimes scratch the disc while inserting/ejecting. And if the disc gets stuck...

160GB/7200rpm... other countries dont allow Sony notebooks to be customerised, such as Australia, New Zealand, etc. Even if its possible for customisation, I will stick to upgrading it myself as I am sure the 160GB Sony charges will be at premium compared to what I can find myself at a local computer store. The 1 year warranty doesnt bother me as I tend to void it straight away with upgrades to my liking.

Even if there is no crapware, I will still format the OS, and install it how I WANT IT, not how Sony wants it.

As for partitioning.. easy.. Partiion Magic!

I have two questions on the new SZ6 Vaio laptops.

    - What resolutions are supported on the external display? The Sony Website doesn't say. My current Vaio doesn't support 1680x1060 LCD's and I need something that does.

    - I think the SZ6 supports DVI with the Sony docking adapter but I'd read some Vaio users complaining this doesn't work very well with the SZ4 and DVI. Anyone have any pointers on this?

    Thanks

I'm a huge fan of the SZ series and look forward to purchasing the new SZ6 ASAP. (I currently have the SZ340)

Question ???..... it appears Sony is shipping the SZ 6 with 533 mhz and not 667 mhz ram? Can anyone confirm this as a fact and the reason it would not ship with 667?

Secondly, I was reading on the FZ thread that you must be running 64bit vista in order to utilize the 4mb of ram. Is this true?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Yes, you must be running a 64-bit OS to be able to allocate 4GB of ram, otherwise, it'll do around ~3GB.

not sure if its the case with Sony too, but it seems to be dependent on the chipset more so than the OS. the 32 bit vista home premium on dell xps m1330 can see and use 4gb of ram. santa rosa chipset has the ability to use 4gb of ram

probably because sony has been incorporating LED screens for so long that its nothing special for them anymore. and also, its becoming the norm across many brands of laptops.

The SZ430 did not. Only the Premium SZ's have LED's (i.e.: SZx50 and above). All the new SZ6's on the Sony business site are Premium models.

Sony has this neoprene case for the S series. But the online support has confirmed it fits perfectly on the SZ's.

thinking about pulling the trigger on this and jumping ship from my m1330 thats been on order for about a month, my only reservation is the support. How is sonys warranty support compared to dell?

My experience with in-warranty support from Sony is that is efficient. (they ship a box, you ship the pc to them, they ship it back). Out of warranty support is expensive.
I also have an m1330 on order but may switch to a SZ650. In either case, I'm going with the 3-year warranty with damage protection (I'm replacing a S260 that's out of warranty and would cost >$700 to fix). Given the price of repairs (and a tendency to drop things), it's probably worth it.

That is the thing that switched me from a Vaio to the m1330 -- is the SONY support. Dell's support (as bad as it may be) is 100% better than anything that SONY has. If you go the VAIO route, make sure it is an NBD at your home/business. The express ship repair could have your notebook tied up for a month (my last experience). My last DELL experience -- notebook fried overseas on a Friday, called DELL on Saturday -- parts shipped on Monday, arrived at 11am Tuesday at the local repair center -- Tech at my home at noon -- fixed by 12:30pm.

Your guess is as good as mine. But since the SZ5 series were a non-starter, my guess is that the UK will get it soon because the SZ6 series is a quantum leap over any preceding models.

Besides, this is our payback for getting the TZ series so late! ;)

What is your basis for that?

The bag is a Timbuk2 Pro Series Messenger Bag:

    http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/messenger/pro-series-messenger

The medium version (which seems to be what they are including with the XPSM1330) costs $130.

So maybe not $150 (that is the price for the XXL version), but I don't see what your basis is for saying the bag isn't even worth $50.

As far as I know, Timbuk2's bags are pretty well regarded, and this looks like a pretty nice bag as near as I can tell.

Why do the SZ6 spec sheets say

    Ethernet Protocol: Fast Ethernet (RJ-45)
    Ethernet Speed: 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T

Are these Fast Ethernet (100mb) or Gigabit Ethernet (1000mb)? The first line contradicts the second.

    Then we disagree. :)
Keep in mind you're talking about MSRP, I'm talking about relative value, compared to what else ou can get for that kind of money and I really don't think they worth more than $40-50 regardless of their list prices.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying they aren't good - Timbuk2 IS good quality, it's just not for me for $150; you can get more exclusive bags for $150, that's all I'm saying.

BTW if you google for "timbuk2" you'll see the market confirms me:

    $40 - http://store.soliscompany.com/ticlmebaglac.html
    $45 - http://shopseejanerun.stores.yahoo.net/timmetro.html
    $65 - http://goinginstyleonline.stores.yahoo.net/mesbagtimlar.html

Umm, sorry, but none of those bags are the Pro Messenger Bag being discussed, which does have a higher price than the ones being sold there.

Either way, thank you for clarifying your point. It's fine to say that, for you, they aren't worth $150 or whatever.

Your original post basically just flat out stated the Timbuk2 Messenger Pro case being offered wasn't even worth $50, which I don't think is specifically true. It's quite another thing to simply say you don't find it to be worth $150 (or $130, whatever).

As far as I can tell, the extra cost of the Pro Messenger Bag seems to be reflected in the materials and construction, which do seem to be different from some of the cheaper Timbuk2 bags (likes the ones you linked to).
