The SZ680 might have a choice of keyboard color, besides being able to customize and make cheaper.

my hapennyworth..after a year of using the SZ series and agreeing with others about the sleekness..I have to say that the heat problems on mine and those of colleagues is a real problem. As seen elsewhere on this forum, the temperatures seem way to high - even under very normal usage (not video editing etc.). I have hardly burnt a few DVDs and the laser has now gone.

I have been using the premium models and I really had hoped that the latest SZ would have updated the design to make the whole thing stronger..but most importantly, cooler.

Only problem is that after using SZs, it's difficult to like other, less sleek laptops :)

how warm will the new SZ run is my question - especially if using the 7200 rpm drive?

Was looking at the spec sheet on Newegg.com (which I know has errors but I've confirmed this with other website listings) and I noticed that the different SZ6 models are being shipped with different batteries. The BPS9A/B and the BPS10. Does anyone know what if any differences there are between batteries?

At least the sz's portable one is selling they don't have a white keyboard, this is the 680's, also in the sony website the 680's show WAN as a standard feature when in reality the 680's as of today dont have WAN

Anyone seen the SZ6 appear in Europe yet? I'm in Sweden and a sales rep for VAIO Sweden told me that it should be released very soon, yet she couldnt give me further details. If there are more Swedish visitors here, interested in the SZ6, check www.newsdesk.se frequently, thats where Sony announces their new models.

After my XPS1330 got delayed until September i cancelled, so now I'm hoping for the SZ6 but who knows when I actually will be able to order it.

Adam, good on ya! More than pictures, I'm anxious to hear how the 680's H-HDD is working. The flash front on it seems kinda small. Are you noticing any performance advantages? Does it match the speed of a 7200 rpm unit???
    Thx!

Tom's Hardware already published tests on the hybrid drive Sony is using. You get about a 2% increase in speed, but it's still a slow 4200 rpm drive.

Vista booting on anything slower than 7200 rpm is painful.

Actually, it's a 5,200 RPM drive. I've been uninstalling all the crap, and installing some other software. It doesn't feel sluggish, booting is quick enough. For vista, it's not too bad...

The performance gains weren't that high, but they reported that the H-HDD cut the boot time from 33 seconds to 24 seconds for Vista on a similarly spec'd laptop.

Here is the review for those looking for the link:

I saw the SZ650 at Fry's today - looks pretty nice!

I'm still not sold on the hybrid drive, even at 5400 rpm. I posted earlier why I think that. A larger 7200 rpm drive is a better fit for me.

I can't imagine that the light leakage is only problematic on the 650's. I ordered a 691 with HDD and RAM upgrade, which will void the Sony warranty right from the start.

Well at least I won't have to worry about bloatware.

It doesn´t void the warranty if people certified by sony make the upgrade. The HDD will have it´s own warranty given by the store in my case P1, the RAM warranty will have the manufacturers warranty.

If you changed the HDD that would void the warranty.

If I got a 1GB version of the SZ6 and what to upgrade to 2GB or ram is it better to put in 1x2GB module or 2x1GB. Does the SZ6 use dual channel or something?

I wanted the sz691 also but I couldn't afford it with the upgrades so I went for performance instead of style, but you will have both congrats! :)

My lappy was going to ship today but since I made it very clear I wanted no light leakage. they tested the screen and had to ask for a replacement from sony since light leakage was pretty severe. They will get a new one upgraded by wedensday and I am paying for next day shipping I want it!!!

    For the Aussies out there:

Sonystyle Australia has just slashed 10% off the Vaio SZ43GNB. Offer valid until september 30 or until stocks last. It's being publicised as a special for Father's day, but methinks (or hope!) they're trying to clear their stocks for the SZ6.

I need your help guys. I wanna learn that the Vaio Sz- 650 N/c comes with a 64 bit vista OS or not. According to the following sony website they do not come with 64 bit OS.
    http://www.iq.sony.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN...=results,UseTemplate=case.tem,VARSET_TOP=TRUE

and weirdly it says that sony does not produce 64 bit laptops. I thought all core 2 duos are 64 bit. am I wrong?

finally, does sony support web site contain now all the drivers required for a clean vista install. I check the 650n/c drivers page...I could not find for example dvd optical drive driver

You are more than likely correct. Retail margins on Sony notebooks are normally around 10%, and Sony normally only ever discount 5%. Based on that, I would say that they have been told to get rid of their stock quickly.

Core 2 Duos support 64 bit OS's, but Sony doesn't currently support 64 bit Vista on any notebooks I'm aware of. So it may be hard to find the neccessary drivers to run 64 bit Vista on the SZ.

    [duplicate post]

Just went there and spec'ed the 680.
Thought you might be interested in hearing about a couple differences the CTO has from the business solutions' offering:

The unit's base is silver. Into that, you have the option of dropping either a silver ($20 extra) or black keyboard.
The ONLY WWAN available for it is not Sprint's EVDO Rev. A service, but rather ATT's pokey Edge offering. What's that about?! :err:

Great selection of hard drives: including a 200 Gb unit running at 7200 rpm
    Shipping time: 1 week.

Annoyingly, the business solutions 680 is still a no show!

University Computers got another shipment today but they're all being delivered for older orders. Seems mine won't be shipped until next week.

I asked about accomodations in case of light leakage and was told that they won't check the notebooks for this. I asked about returning it in case of light leakage and was told that Sony would have to deem this a defect (which I have no idea if they have). Anyways, got my fingers crossed that mine turns out OK.

PS. The guy I talked to on the phone wasn't familiar with the term 'light leakage' so I explained it to him. Yet somehow, he had the technical savvy (???) to explain that LED backlights give the APPEARANCE of light leakage simply because they're so bright but that this was a normal inherent trait of the technology.

Sony SZ6 seems like the only ideal laptop for me... lightweight, powerful, stylish... however, like all the rest of the VAIOs, it does NOT support Virtualization Technology (VT)... that's very disappointing... I might have to give up on it...

anyone knows if VT is in work?

Portable one does checkfor light leakage actually my 680 was ready to ship but when compared to others light leakage was quite severe so sony is sending a replacement tomorrow. P1 service is good in that way they can accomodate anything

What is comforting about ordering through P1 in light (no pun intended) of the light leakage situation is that they are an authorized service center so they can get replacements before the unit ships to the end-user, ensuring a perfect (or reasonably perfect) product.

Yea I checked out their site and they look like a really good place. Were I not so sure that my order @ University Computers will be shipped out next week I'd probably cancel my order and try P1 instead. But I'm guessing that I waited a bit too long anyways so P1 probably has backorders piling up.
