    Hi

I have a Sony Vaio VPCS13L8E, it has an i3-M380 CPU, I'd like to upgrade it to a i5-M480, will my machine support it? Which is the most powerful CPU my MB will support?

This is my first Sony, I've had ASUS and ACER machines in the past and have upgraded them at will, this SONY lark is all new to me.

    Thanks.

I'm not sure if the CPU is socketed in or soldered in. At least on the VPCZ series, the CPU has been soldered in making replacing it quite annoying (ie, you gotta unsolder then resolder the CPU). The VGN-Z series had socketed CPUs though.

    OK, seems no one knows!

How do I find the model number for the motherboard?

It is not soldered :) You can upgrade to any Arrandale CPU you wish, just remember that not all have integrated GPU, so if you don't have an NVIDIA card, you should choose a CPU with integrated video :)

Btw. you would have had more success with advises if you wrote in the S owners thread ;) There are also pictures and info about one or 2 upgrades like that ;)

But why have they made the S socketed and the Z they didn't? :(

Can't have it all :) S has a few very nice advantages over the Z and the other way around.
