I recently bought as preconfigured S170 from Sonystyle. Its got A Centrino 1.7Ghz with 2MB cache and DVD-writer.
When i printed the configuration it didnt show that it had wifi built in.

    Question:
    1. Is there a way to check if it has wifi built in? I have no way of knowing as the laptop was shipped to my cousin in LA and i'll see her and (sigh) my laptop next week.
    2. If there's none is there aplace where i can buy the Wifi over the counter or preferably online. I know its user installable as i saw a picure in this forum of an opened underside of an S170 and i noticed that there was a card (with intel printed on it) beside the memory chips.

    TIA

I don't think you can even opt out of wireless on these machines, so I'm sure it's there. If you want to know, call customer service. As for the card itself, it's a mini-PCI card that drops right into a slot, an easy install.

Is it really a Celeron? You can look in the properties of “My Network Places” or in the device manager. Does it have a switch on the left front of the case for turning WiFi on and off?

    hi there...

im sure you DONT have a CELERON, and that you DO have a CENTRINO mobile processor.

Heres the Great News... Centrino processors have built in wireless technology as standard. a quick google check for your model confirms this... wifi is not an option it is built in.

even better news.. you get both wifi standards, called b and g... g is even way faster than the old style b technology...

    happy days for you!!!

True that g is faster than b... but you can't surf the net any faster than you would be able to on b.
And g is often plagued with connection drops and other such mishaps... from my own experience, even though g and b use a frequncy of 2.4 GHz, g is much more unstable.
b works like a dream, however
