Eh, kinda right. If you go to the Vaio Control Center in the control panel, you can set the fans to "Balanced" which keeps things quiet, or "Performance" which focuses more on heat dissipation and keeps things cooler.

I don't see any fan control in the Vaio Control center in my FZ-190. Are you talking about the power plans?

I've had this feature on my CW and a NW I used to have, but I just thought it was just a standard thing... check my screenshot, this is from my Vaio Control Panel. Do you have this?

I don't have that option. My FZ is a older model (2007), so the newer utilities don't work as expected. Thanks for the screenshot.
Also installing Vaio Power Mgt removes the "PCI Express" and "System Cooling Policy (under processor power mgt)" from the Windows 7 advanced power options. Do you have these in the advanced power options?

Thanks for this useful tip, since I have switched to "Balanced" in my Acer Aspire I can confirm that the fan comes on after a long period(ie: temps rises slowly) and quieter fan noise. +rep for you. :)
