I decided to make a new thread about my problem instead of piggybacking on Duke2007 thread.
Here's my problem. My buddy deleted the recovery partition when he tried to install Vista Ultimate 64-bit on my SR190. I'm trying to avoid having to pay $38.95 for a recovery disc because the service rep said I have past 30 days since I purchased my laptop (**** you Sony!).
I just tried installing SR190 drivers on Sony's website with Vista Ultimate installed. Here's my problem; I keep getting a message saying my battery is incompatible and the system is going to go into hibernate mode. I reseat the battery and I get the same message.
I would like to know exactly what drivers I need and do not need on Sony's support site. Here are my specs:
Microsoft® Office Home and Student Edition 2007
No Fresh Start™
Photo Standard
320 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive [5400 rpm]
Standard Capacity Lithium-ion Battery (BPS13A/B)
Video Standard
Engraving
Trusted Platform Module / Biometric Fingerprint Sensor
QuickBooks Simple Start
Wireless LAN (802.11a/b/g/n) with integrated Bluetooth® technology
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3470
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz)
DVD±R DL / DVD±RW / DVD-RAM Drive
13.3" WXGA (XBRITE-ECO™ technology)
Windows® Live OneCare 90-Day Trial
Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium with Service Pack 1
4 GB DDR2-SDRAM (DDR2-800, 2GBx2)
I just want all the essentials to work, like bluetooth, fingerprint reader, wifi & lan and mode switch.

Well, I posted this in Duke's thread as a reply, but I'll post it here again. I think it's important that you download & install the correct drivers. Try using Universal Extractor with the executables you download for the SR290 for Windows Vista Ultimate. You should see in your extracted files an exe called checkver.exe, which is what's preventing you from installing those drivers on your SR190. Bypassing that and going straight to setup.exe or finding the inf files should hopefully solve the problem.
-
I will give that a try and report back.
-
By the way, someone has reportedly had trouble using the universal extractor on the 64-bit executables from Sony. I'm not exactly sure what the problem was, but I tested it on one of the 64-bit files using the WUN_UNPACKER option and it seemed to extract without any problems, so something to keep in mind if you run into trouble.
-
I'm reading both threads for this laptop and I just installed Universal Extractor and extracted using WUN_UNPACKER option and it extracted just fine. I'm downloading all the necessary files for Vista Ultimate 64-bit on Sony's website right now.
I haven't tried installing the extracted files, will report back. -
Great. Let us know how it works!
-
Works like a charm, Lattice's method of using Universal Extractor and extracting (using WUN_UNPACKER option) SR290 Vista Ultimate 64-bit drivers works on SR190. Here's a reminder, remember to delete the " ®" in the file name before extracting with Universal Extractor, leaving the " ®" in the file name will not work. I had to rename all the drivers to their proper file names, matching INDOTH-14778700-64.EXE with Intel® Chipset Driver is a pain in the @ss.
-
So all of the drivers worked? -
I installed the 64-bit (which isn't really 64-bit) Arcsoft WebCam Companion® Software just to test it out and see if it works and it did. Now I'm in the process of extracting all the other 64-bit drivers and see if they will work. I kept telling myself, hardware wise, the SR190 and SR290 is essentially the same with the exception of HDMI support on the SR290 so why wouldn't the 64-bit drivers for the SR290 work on the SR190? Lattice provided the perfect tool to bypass Sony's stupid verification and hopefully after I finish extracting all the files that they'll all work on the SR190.
And once again, **** you Sony! you proprietary SOB for making me go through this. -
Thanks for the info! please keep us updated! -
Okay, having the same problem after installing Sony® Notebook Utilities, right after system reboots I get a message saying:
"The installed battery may not be properly connected to the computer or may not be compatible with the computer.
Click "OK" to enter Hibernate mode, and remove and reinsert the battery.
See the electronic VAIO(R) User Guide for more information about using the battery."
edit: I'm going to try reinstalling Sony Notebook Utilities with the battery removed and see if that changes anything. -
ohh bummer
-
Okay, apparently I didn't read Sony's instructions clearly, this is what I found:
Microsoft® Windows Vista® Service Pack 1 (SP1) must be installed before installing the Sony Notebook Utilities. If you have performed a clean install of the Microsoft® Windows Vista® 64-bit operating system (i.e., installed from a commercial, off-the-shelf, version rather than using the Recovery Wizard or Recovery Media Kit), please install Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) using Windows Update or from the Microsoft web site.
Basically it's saying install all other drivers, windows updates BEFORE installing Sony Notebook Utilities, or simply install SNU last. -
Oh that's good news I guess.
Thanks for keeping us updated -
I have good news to report gentlemen! All Vista Ultimate 64-bit drivers on Sony's website work on SR190 using the Lattice method.
However I should note:
1) Update Vista to SP1
2) Sony Shared Library is installed BEFORE Sony Notebook Utilities
3) When running SonyNBSetup (file inside Sony Notebook Utilities folder), you need to create a new folder and name it "NONE" (without the quotes) and put all the folders extracted through Universal Extractor inside "NONE" because the setup program searches for those folders through a sub directory folder labeled NONE.
4) Install all other drivers and updates BEFORE installing step 2. -
Sweettt
thanks a lot.
so the function keys, mode switch, and the vaio control center work now? -
Yup, Everything and I mean EVERYTHING works. No quesiton marks in Device Manager (everything is detected). Fn keys, Mode Switch, VAIO Control Center, everything works.
-
That's very good news
Thanks for keeping us all updated! -
Yay! It's always great to hear success stories. Thanks for all the updates and clarifications!
-
sweet. could somebody put together a step by step guide or something so it's easier to follow?
thanks
P.S. Does 64-Bit LOOK any different? Is it any faster than 32-bit? Most of all...is it worth it? -
Hi Duke! Here's my attempt at piecing everything together - maybe you can update your first post with the instructions?
- Download the 64-bit drivers from Sony Support for the VGNSR290 model - making sure that you have the drivers for the correct hardware (e.g. don't download the HDMI drivers, if you have the Atheros card, don't download the Intel wireless drivers)
- Download the Universal Extractor
- Extract each exe file that you downloaded from the first step using the WUN_UNPACKER option
- Backup these driver files onto a USB drive or somewhere else.
- Install Windows Vista.
- Install ALL drivers and updates
- Upgrade Vista to SP1
- Install Sony Shared Libraries
- Install Sony Notebook Utilities. Let's say you have it under a folder named "Utilities." You need to create a new folder named "NONE" inside the "Utilities" folder and move all the files under there. If I'm not mistaken, you should leave the the SonyNBSetup in place, and it will search the NONE subfolder when installing everything.
And that should work! -
That's about right. I believe Upgrade Vista to SP1 should be step 6 instead of step 7 since Sony Shared Library and Sony Notebook Utilities require SP1. I updated Vista SP1 with all the lastest updates before installing any drivers. (actually I installed video and audio drivers first because it's really hard working with a small resolution and no sound)
I believe there was one file (Infineon Trusted Platform Module Professional Package) that I encountered that would not extract using the WUN_UNPACKER option and I switched to the slower E_Wise Unpacker option. After every extract I renamed TEMPEXEFOLDER to the driver's actual file name which makes it a lot easier to know which driver is which.Attached Files:

I do have one question, what's included in the Infineon Trusted Platform Module Professional Package? because I don't have the software that originally came with the system for the fingerprint reader. Does anybody know if it's included in the Infineon package?
-
I think you can download the Infineon thing on their web site for free.. and I have the fingerprint program uploaded somewhere.. but I gotta find it.. -
i keep getting the battery incompatibility error when I install the notebook utilities...
-
Did installing SP1 not solve the problem? Did you follow the order of instructions exactly as they are?
-
I already had sp1...so to follow your directions exactly i will have to format/re-install...and im not ready to do that...but at some point i will be
everything on my system works like a champ except i dont have the mode or settings buttons working.... -
You could try uninstalling all the drivers and programs related to Sony so far, and then reinstall the drivers, reinstall the Sony shared libraries, and then reinstall the Sony Utilities last? I don't think you need to reformat/reinstall hopefully! And one other minor thing - I can't remember where this was listed, but it helps to rename the files to be without any special symbols like the (R) in Intel or something like that.
-
I also suggest making a image using imaging software like Acronis True Image after you reinstall and configure everything.I f anything happens in the future you don't have to go through the painful process of reinstalling and reconfiguring all your settings again. Much more efficient than stupid restore discs with outdated drivers and software.

Hi, I am trying to install the Sony firmware extension parser but when I extractthe files there is a DPinst64 file that when I click it it does nothing. Any help on how to install those?? Thx in advance
