SSD VGN-Z models not on SONY's site?

A friend just pointed out that VGN-Z models with SSD's are not on SONY's site for ordering, and also CTO VGN-Z models can not be configured with SSD right now.

I figured that this was either an SSD supply problem, or that the models SONY has been using are not TRIM-enabled for Windows 7.

Anyone know the true reason that they are not currently available?

SSD's were all out of stock last week but still appeared on the website and now they took them off completely.
Don't know what's going on really.

    What SSDs were they using?

Some SSDs suffer from low performance and wear...

Well as Sony offers just SSD in raid 0, there is no chance for TRIM anyway. It's still possible to configure Z with SSD in Japan. It's also possible they're just out of stock, maybe Samsung is waiting with releases until the new promised fw. Anyway, I was waiting for over a month for my custom ordered Intel SSD...

They were using Samsung SSDs...and there's no real problem with them I would say...

Not sure, I'm not following the SSD thread closely enough... but aren't Intel SSDs better?

Well it's hard to say. In general I would say they are. Intel SSDs are the best with small files seq. read/write and are easily firmware upgradeable, while Samsung's have better power consumption. I've tried both and I love them both :)

...bottom line...most of big computer producers (eg Sony, Dell, ...) are using Samsung OEM SSDs in their computers.

Hmm. Well random writes read are the most important in general use (doesn't mean sequential write is unimportant)

I suspect Samsung is just the cheapest option then...

On "out of stock" - according to the SSD thread Samsung failed with a recent update...

Well, yeah you're right, both are pretty important. I wouldn't say, they're just cheapest...they are also longer time around. Also the wearing off problem was reported as much stronger on previous version of Intel SSDs than the Samsung ones. What more, who really screw up with firmware update on their SSD is Intel, who actually bricked many user computers because of their mistake. When I was buying Samsung SSD, Intel was something to stay away. Right now I believe Intel is better choice (that's why I chose one). Now I'm selling my Sammy on eBay. Just hope there'll not be a time, when OCZ will be the best choice ,))

I waited untll my Z570 was out of warranty, then had a skilled tech put an X25-M 160GB Gen 2 in it.
Also tiny bump from 3GB to 4GB memory. I updated to the TRIM firmware, no problems, no brick!
I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate installed, no issues. It is the fastest notebook I have ever used, nothing even comes remotely close.

SONY doesn't offer the INTEL drives, as we know. There would be supply issues (and the firmware issue) and SONY wouldn't pay the premium for them anyhow.

I wasn't aware of an SSD thread for the Z model already existing here?

If anyone knows anything other than speculation on why the SSD model Z's can not be currently ordered, please reply.

What Firmware issue? You mean the "no BIOS password one" - all current X25-M drives ship with the new firmware.

The no BIOS password deal was like ages ago!

No, I mean the TRIM support firmware, the second firmware issue.
The one that was supposed to be bricking Windows 7 setups.

I got that firmware before it was pulled, and flashed my 160GB Gen 2 with
    no issue.

    But....
My question was about the real reason SONY is not offering SSD's on the Z
models right now, not about X25-M's which I already have, and which SONY has never offered.

As far as I am aware that bricking (thanks Dave) only happened during the upgrade.

And also, new drives come with that Firmware - I have a G2 Intel SSD and that has a new firmware.

    That's fine, thanks.
I didn't brick mine either, it is perfect.
    In fact, I have 2 x 160GB X25-M Gen 2's and they
are both flashed to new firmware, no problems.

But....please excuse me, I am not being rude, but...
that is not what I started this thread to ask about.
