    I have the Vaio Z11VN which is 2.53/4GB/320GB 5400/DVDRW/1600 X 900
I really want to replace my normal slow HDD with a 256 GB SSD. what is the best to do :

1- Get the OCZ 250 GB SSD ($800)?
2- Wait a couple of months and get the Samsung 256 GB SSD (what would be its price)?
3- Get a 320 GB 7200 RPM normal drive and forget about SSD for now
4- do nothing now and wait till next year and i should get a better deal on SSD hard drives

If you're talking about the OCZ Core SSD I would advice to read up on the problems of the Jmicron controller that it uses. Here for example: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3403&p=7

    Other options include:
    - WD5000BEVT (500GB) and faster than the Toshiba 320GB/5400rpm you have now.
    - Seagate 7200.4 500GB that is expected in a month or so.

I'm in the same position as you, with the same model Z. I have already opted to go with option 4 - wait until my warranty is up and by then hopefully SSD will be more realistically priced in decent capacities. ;)

My guess would be it would be quite expensive - more like the Intels than the OCZs in terms of price (and performance).

Same model as you. I'm going for option 4.

If my speed gets too slow, i'll get the biggest 7200rpm, then when that gets slow, i'll get the biggest SSD and hopefully by then, it'll drop in price. I need a SSD which is around 320gb.

i think SSD will save me buying a new laptop unless Sony release the Sony Z with a Backlit Keyboard, i'll want to upgrade.

I got the 200gb 7200rpm... it's quite fast but not SSD fast. SSD will make for a nice upgrade in a year.

    Some more benchmarks:

Strange thing is that Intel is the fastest SSD, but it's not so good in booting Vista.

All I can say is I have the 2x64GB (and I have a bit of buyer's remorse in the sense that now it can be 2x128GB). It's the fastest disk I/O and dead silent. Boot up time is about 30 seconds. Personally, boot up time isn't my issue. Stuff like VMWare flies on the Z. No complaints.

I'm envious of the RAID0 SSD users like yourself... couldn't justify the cost to myself but it's nice! :)

Slightly OT... I'm hoping that once SSD tech matures a bit, vendors release drives fitting the usual standard form factor which include 2 x SATA interfaces (effectively two drives in one) to allow RAID setups in smaller spaces and removing the need to kludge the drive casing as Sony has done in the Z. One can but dream...

Since what I do for a living kinda depends on good equipment, I can justify it. Plus, I've always had a disk issue (I/Os or capacity ... or both at the same time). The RAID0 is an expensive solution, but kudos for Sony putting it in the Z.

My Samsung SSD SataII 64GB boots in 40 secs...all programs are fast - had lag once or twice in over a month.

I noticed while I was in Tokyo last week the jp Z series can be configured with 2x128 GB SSD!
