Tried to watch a DVD on a plane with my new 330 -- but even with all volume sliders turned all the way up (both in audio properties and with the keyboard shortcuts) the volume was barely loud enough to hear the dialog.

Sounded fine through the built in speakers (when you pull out the miniplug), and works fine with external desktop speakers plugged in, but with these maxell ear buds (like the kind you use with ipods, etc) -- you can't hear much (regular background commercial airline noise.)

I wonder if I'm missing something simple -- has anyone had the same trouble?

My two knee-jerk thoughts are to check and make sure the application you are using doesn't have a separate volume control, and to check and make sure that your earbuds don't have an independent volume control on them (I know some do ---- but that trend might have died out a few years back).

Do the headphones work fine with other devices?

This one is difficult because every manufacturer makes their components with different properties instead of a standard. I fly all the time with my SZ370 and use a Bose noise cancelling set. I have to have the computer volume turned down to about halfway or it is simply too loud and I never amplify it with the headsets power. On your next trip try to borrow a friends ear buds for the trip or just use an old set and compare. Aircraft are loud. That is very true. Just try a noise cancelling set to prove that. But you should be able to hear your computer output. Heck, try plugging in the aircrafts free headset. See what that is like.
