    Gidday guys

My SZ 483 (T7400) is running Vista Business and I am wondering what is the maximum RAM it will support. It currently has 2 x 1G 667, and I am keen to put 2 x 2G sticks in (I know Vista 32 will only see 3G, but I want to keep it all similar). The shop I bought the machine from reckons 2G is all it will support, but they did qualify it by saying "the brochure says......." Anyone have a definitive answer???

    Thanks and regards.

For almost all Morem based notebooks (yours having the T7400 which is the 2.16Gb Morem C2D) the anwser is 2Gb is the max.

I have read other threads where people were able to see 3.2Gigs.

Can anyone who has a SZ483 confirm this? I would be getting mine soon and post the results but want to know if it can take RAM beyond the 2Gig as promised by Sony

Pretty sure SZ4 (I have SZ460) is max at 2GB.

The max is 3GB. I can confirm it works, I had 3GB in my SZ320. The max for the SZ's with the Santa Rosa platform (600 series and above) is 4GB with a 64-bit OS.

According to Crucial.com and other RAM upgrade sites, it's 1GB/slot max which is what I remember when purchasing. Unless there is something they're missing.

So, does it mean that Sony just claims max 2GB but the laptop can actually take 3GB?

    Yes, that's correct.

@MaXimus777: You can upgrade yours to 3GB as well. And the CR series can actually take 4GB with a 64-Bit OS.

Remember with 3GB the RAM will not run in dual channel, take a look at the following guide to get a better understanding of it: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=167472

    Gotcha.

Now tell me, is it better to stick to 2GB dual channel

Or get 3GB and forget about Dual Channel?

Which do you think will perform better, overall?

(Slower but more memory OR Faster but lesser memory?)

I have tried 2 x 2GB in my Zepto 6024W and couldn't see any significant performance improvement compared with 3GB, so the second 2GB module went into my Sony G11.

The Intel 945 and 965 mobile chipsets both support 2GB modules. However, since 2GB modules only became available and affordable less than one year ago many manufacturers didn't mention them in their specs (maybe couldn't afford to buy a couple to validate that they worked). There's a small chance that a computer manufacturer might cripple the BIOS to not work with a 2GB module, but I can't see the sense in doing that.

    Thanks John Ratsey.

I wanted to know which will increase overall performance:

(Slower but more memory - 3GB non-dual channel mode

OR Faster but lesser memory? - 2GB in DUAL Channel mode)

No, it will not. The 100-500 series have the 945 chipset which only has 4GB of address memory and a minimum of 8GB is require to recognize more then 3GB. Only the 600 and 700 series SZ's have the 965 chipset which will see 4GB of RAM with a 64-Bit OS.

    Gidday guys.

Thanks for all the responses, and sorry I have been slack reposting. I went with 1 x 1G and 1 x 2G and if anything, it seemed to slow my machine down. Also, memory usage actually went up, while the machine was doing the exact same things as before (just sitting idling) from about 1.2g to 1.8g. In the percentage indicator, the amount stayed about the same. I was really surprised at this, I did not think increasing RAM would increase the amount the machine actually used. Can anyone explain this?

    Regards to all.

So maybe it's worth dropping back to either 2 x 1g, or spend $90 and grab another stick of 2g and whack 2 x 2g in. I know it will not see 4g, but will it be in dual channel then?

    Regards to all.

Yes, it will be dual channel even when the full 4GB is not recognized.

Just installed 2x2GB Kingston Value RAM PC2-5300 (667MHZ) on sale at Fry's for $80 complete on my SZ460, Vista sees 31xxmb RAM and so far it works faster and more stable than 2x1GB.

I found this thread interesting because I also want 3 GB in my SZ-38 (Similar to USA SZ-360, T7200 CPU). I use Vista Business on the computer.

I tested my computer with 1GB, and 2x1GB, and it is definitely faster when in dual channel mode. So I don't want 1Gb + 2GB, I would prefer 2X2GB, even if it only recognizes 3.2GB, so that I can keep dual channel access. The memory is cheaper now, so this is OK. I can use the old 1GB sticks elsewhere.

Does anyone have anything further to add to this discussion ?

Note : The SZ3 and SZ4 computers are identical except for Vista and a bigger hard disk (I have in any event upgraded mine to 250GB).

OK, I bought 2 x 2GB and it works fine. The BIOS recognizes 4096KB, but only 3200KB is available.

I did some tests in the store, 2 x 2GB access is faster than 1GB + 2GB, so the full dual channel access does seem to work. So it seems that 2 x 2GB is better, even if you waste a small amount of money - the 2GB sticks are quite cheap now.

The TZ has only 1 memory slot therefore it's maximum is 2GB.
