This is the second time a SZ battery has died on me. I had the last one for about 12 months, and then POOF. The replacement one I got from Sony also only lasted for 12 months. I don't excessively wear down the battery, or use it differently than the average user. Long story short, bye bye SZ. No more Sony laptops for me ever. One too many problems with them in the past and was hoping for something different in the present.

You won't escape this by jumping to another vendor. I have personal experience of this with Sony, Lenovo, and Dell. This is just a limitation of today's battery technologies. In my experience, laptop batteries go over a cliff after 12-18 months of use, even sooner with heavy use, dropping from the manufacturer's rated runtime to a quarter of of that or less. I have never been able to recover one after this has happened. These batteries don't last forever, and this is the signal that it is time to buy a new one .
