Will the SZ dock automatically detect my DVI desktop display when docking/undocking? If so in what modes (on, sleep, hibernate, etc)?

I have an S580 and am upgrading to the SZ. The S580 dock is basically dumb - when I dock, I need to manually tell it about the desktop DVI display and even reposition it every time. When I undock, it still thinks the display is there until I tell it - which is difficult since I make the desktop display the "primary" display when docked (so I can't ever see the display properties after I undock).

Also, I saw in another thread mention of "UltraMon" as a possible solution, but it wasn't completely clear how much it solved the problem.

I have used Thinkpads in the past and several people in the office have them, and they just "work" as expected when hot docking/undocking.

    Thanks.

I plan on posting a detailed writeup about the docking station as I have played with it a lot over the last few days. Should I post it here or make a new thread?

To answer your question, the dock is actually pretty good at detecting the sony. When you dock, if you have the sony settings to automatically switch to the external monitor, it will do that. When you undock, it switches back to the notebook lcd. (this can depend on your settings)

As for ultramon, I'm new to it but its great for my dual external monitor setup.

    Hi

The SZ dock will automatically detect the DVI screen, however most of the time you will have to setup the properties as the SZ seems unable to remember the previous settings.

things that usually need to be reset:
-Position: left or right, it always reset to the external screen being on the left of the laptop
    -Resolution.

That's something extremely annoying that every time you plug the screen you need to reset the screen.
One thing to keep in mind is do not turn off the laptop while docked, undock it and then turned it on. Most of the time the screen of mine stayed black.
If you undock it, then turn it off , it's fine.

I have not yet experienced those issues yet. Still trying to figure out how to get maximum resolution from my Samsung Syncmaster 181T monitor. The manual states you can get 1280 x 1024 at 60MHZ. However, my newly purchased SZ780NW from P1 goes up to 1280 x 800, but in order to fit the screen properly, the maximum resolution is 1024 x 768. How can I take advantage of the maximum resolution of 1280 x 800? My Samsung monitor is a 18.1". Already downloaded the driver from the Samsung site. It appears the monitor does not allow to go over 1024 x 768. I look forward to some suggestions. It is very frustrating. My IBM ThinkPad never gave me any issues. BTW, I am using the Sony dock with analog connection. Not using DVI.
