I love the SZ but want to wait until August to buy one. Do you think it will still be around then? I know some configurations will change, but I'm mostly concerned about the size. Thanks in advance.

Merom is due to come out in august, along with the standard august-refresh for the school laptop buying season. I'm hoping that either Sony adapts the SZ series with the new platform or lowers the price.
I really like how that little book looks.

There is a laptop refresh season? I don't think Sony conforms to any regular schedule for changing anything. The last I read Merom was supposed to be out in Oct/Nov at the earliest. And some posts in this forum have Sony reps saying there are no plans for the SZ to carry the Merom. For Sony that translates to the SZ, if still around in a year or its replacement, will get the Merom.

Have you *ever* read or heard a manufacturer representative stating that "yes our future product will outperform the current one etc?

Of course they won't tell you "oh just wait there's a new one coming. They want you to buy it and they want you to buy it now

Bingo! I am pretty sure the sz will carry the Merom. It is actually very similar to the current duo core except that it uses 64 bit and is somewhat faster.

The thing is ... not all apps are 64-bit so the advantage to Merom will only really happen when the apps you use have a 64-bit option.

That was the point of my sentence "that translates to the SZ, if still around in a year or its replacement, will get the Merom." Sony was stating one thing to people and my translation of what they were saying is that is will eventually happen.

All estimates I've read from reliable sources put the Merom release well into Q4 ’06 at the earliest. That means we will see them in laptops starting early ‘07. Just like the TX hasn’t jumped on the CoreDuo bandwagon yet, the SZ won’t immediately switch to Merom when its out. Possibly a couple months after Merom release the SZ may see the new chip. But all that puts the earliest we will see an SZ (or its replacement model) with Merom at Q1 or Q2 next year (this time next year).

On the other hand, putting a Core Duo into the TX probably would require extensive changes to the motherboard (and no doubt would require the low-voltage chips). Whereas the Merom is pin-compatible with the current Core Duo chips, so it is probably less design work to upgrade the SZ. But then, I am a software guy so I may not know what I am talking about. :) Some have said Merom will be available in August -- but that could be wrong.

In any case, it is almost certain Sony will have some laptop that has the Merom chip. They need to do that to be competitive with everyone else.

sony sources informed me that the sz260 will be out in june, and blue ray will be available. which makes sense, because most blue ray articles i have seen state a june 06 release.

I read that as a joke. If it wasnt a joke then it was just a dense post.

Sony is still working on getting out the 170 and 180. They will be lucky if they can release those by June (one month from now). There is no 260 and Sony does not have a blue ray optical drive planned for a current laptop at this time. Not to mention the drive would need to be an ultra thin optical drive that is used in the SZ. Even if Sony changed the optical drive they wouldnt rename it a 260. The post was either a joke or really bad info.

joke, dense post, trust. not a very nice way to ask someone for more info.
i agree though, and apologize for the short post. not much more info i can divulge than what i gave, but it is from someone i trust. dont shoot the messenger! i am passing along what i was told, and hope that helps other vaio fans. regarding only 1 post, i have followed the forum for a long time, just never posted. (there are many people who do this you know!). one reason is to not get into debates like this. i do not check here often enough to reply promptly.

I can confirm that the SZ120P has been discontinued here at compusa, and that the replacements we will be carrying are the sz230p and sz260p. The limited specs in the system so far are the sz230p will have t2400, 13.3" screen (duh), and will cost $2099. The sz260p will also have t2400, 13.3" screen and will cost $2399. I'm glad compusas buyers down in dallas are so great at putting in the important specs into our system. None on order yet, no ETA either. Just waiting...

I looked at the specs between the SZ160 and SZ260 and the only difference between the two models I saw was a difference in the size of the HD, the SZ160 has a 100gb and the SZ260 a 120gb HD. The processor, graphic card amount of ram and everything else is the same.

The SZ260P/C is for sale now! Didn't really mentioned if it comes with blue ray or not. For sure it's a premium model.

Dont even think about Blue-Ray that will add a couple 100$ on your price tag.

hey all of you SZ owners! I'm in a very very very hard position..I need to choose whether I want a FE or SZ as a notebook by tomorrow..I'm 14 years old looking for a notebook that I can carry everyday for school work and also use for games such as WoW. I like the FE but I need to lock some of my files which I can't cause the FE doesnt have a fingerprint sensor..so all you SZ owners..can you tell me what you think of your SZ's and if the SZ screens are big enough for WoW? tell me what you think please..

You don't need a fingerprint sensor to lock your files. If you actually have a requirements for locking files, using a fingerprint is really a gimmick and no better than a pincode replacement.

The kind of sensor used on laptops allow about 1 in 10,000 at best, just like a 4 digits pin

yahiamohamed- 14yr old and you get a laptop? Lucky dawg. If you're getting the sz110/120 vs the fe, then either one is fine. go fe if you can live with the lager ize. same vid card in both. but I think the fe screen in better. If you get the sz160, go sz160. the screen is jsut as good and its more compact.
fingerprint... umm.. yeah if what jy said is true, even 1-10k is good. only becuase you cant randomly choose fingers to break the code. unlike the old fingerprint scanners, I dont think you can break this one with jello mold. :) The sad part, is when you log into windows, you still have the option to type in a password and not use the scanner. one plus is in a crowed place, nobody can see you type in your code if you use a thumb scanner

thanks for that..but don't you think that the SZ has too much of a small screen to be used to play WoW if you're not using an external monitor?
