Yes you can upgrade the SZ HD to a 7200 model, just make sure you get a SATA version, not PATA (ATA-5/6).

In terms of performance, the bootup time will be faster as will be the loading time for just about anything that uses the hard drive intensly. It really comes down to how and for what you use the laptop. In regards to battery life, there isn't much if any difference for it decreasing. I would say it may decrease a little but it won't be much, maybe a few minutes for one full charge to full discharge cycle. The power specs are nearly identical to a 5400 RPM HD.

Is there a link to instructions or is it a relatively simple task?

beware, I just talked to a sales rep at sony and he said that this will void the warrenty. Of course this rep might not know what he's talking about.

Sure it may void the warranty if Sony finds out, but if you just put it back the way it was... in original shipping form, they won't know the difference.

For that reason I keep the original HD around.

Actually a 7200rpm will decrease battery life quite alot, in a 3 hour machine it reduces it by up to 30 minutes though generally its around 20 minutes.
