I just recieved my new SZ6 from Sony. Although I really like all the features and hardware, I simply cannot get past the keyboard at this point. I've read lots of review complaining about the keyboard, so I did go check it out in person at a bestbuy. However, at the bestbuy the store was very noisy, and I did not mind at all the keyboard layout and buttons. Now that I have the laptop in a quiet room, I see that I missed how loud the keyboard is when you type. This keyboard is really loud compared to my previous (fujitsu s6210). I work in a quiet environment, and each time I press a key (I press them hard when I am typing fast), it really echos in the entire room. My co-workers will hear me over everyone else typing. Its kind of an odd sound too, its not muffled, but a higher frequency sound than regular keyboards ("Clik-clak" over "clok").

My question is: how have you dealt with the loud keyboard? Does it bother you, have you noticed it louder? These are computers made for business, I would have expected the keyboard to be quiet for this very reason. Will the keyboard get quieter with time (seeing how the springs are new... I can only hope). I may consider returning this, or selling it on ebay.

    Thank you.

A louder keyboard would be quite annoying... If you need to be using it in a quite environment, I would consider returning it as well.

To be honest, I can't see the keyboard getting too much quieter, but maybe a little as the key gets worn a bit.

I've had my sz491 for about 3 months now and i have definitely noticed that the keyboard is loud. it isn't any less loud now than when i bought it. it does disturb others a bit when working in a quiet environment. fortunately for me, i don't work in quiet environments very much. i've just dealt with it since i like the computer so much otherwise. the sound is my only complaint about the keyboard. most people find other things to complain about and say the keyboard's feel is bad for them. i personally don't mind the feeling--i just do wish i heard it a bit less.

decide now if it's a deal breaker for you because it won't be changing! good luck.

I actually like the keyboard noise. A keyboard protector would help.

That was the first thing I noticed about the SZ6. The keyboard is much louder then my last laptop, but it really doesn't bother me because I mostly work with noise in the background.

That was my impression too. A little rattly and cheep feeling too.

But i just did a test compared to my Logi keyboard and it's no louder. Then again, I'm kind of a key banger anyway.

I do like the full size of the SZ keyboard. The GF has a HP tablet and the keyboard is very small feeling to me - she has small hands and it doesn't bother her. The HP's keyboard is more solid feeling too.

For some reason, I really enjoy the deep travel of the keyboard and I am drawn to the SZ b/c of its keyboard. I know I'm in the minority. I really despise HP keyboards as they are mushy, but they are quiet. Thinkpad keyboards are pretty loud, I think, but they feel great.

So you are saying it is way too loud to use it on lectures?
I have used SZ3 for a while and I didn't find the keyboard's sound annoying. Than again, I think I have never tried typing in a quite environment.
