Hey all --
I just spoke with Sony again about the weird buzzing I'm having with my LCD screen, and they offered to have it shipped back again (third time!) to evaluate the machine for exchange. Before I do this, I want someone to confirm for me that their SZ **does not** make these sounds. I have gone into Best Buy to test their computers, and it seems as if the store models do not make the sound I'm describing, but I can't be positive as Best Buy isn't the quietest environment.![]()
Anyway, the description of my problem is as follows (quoted from a thread I started earlier):
The sound comes from the area where the webcamera is (note that I do not have a webcamera installed on my model ---- perhaps that is a reason why there's a buzz??). You can hear it from the screen-side of the LCD, or from the backside.
Anyway, if at least ONE person can confirm for me that their SZ does not buzz at all and is quiet apart from the occasional fan noise, I'll go ahead and send this unit back to Sony. Again. The sound is driving me nuts... mostly just b/c I know it's there and it's making my super-expensive computer less-than-perfect, you know?
Thanks much for any input.

I have no buzz.
So you have no built in mike?
Double check your sound and make sure the mic is muted and try again. -
Thanks for your feedback.
There is a microphone jack, and yes, it's muted (I checked under both playback and recording properties for bonus points). Like I said, the buzz comes from the top of the LCD, and is apparent when the screen is dimmed.
Glad to hear that yours is okay ---- I'm going to send this one back to sony( ) and either get them to fix the **** thing once and for all, or else exchange it for a new one. Pain in the a$$.
-
I also have no buzz
Im exchanging my today, I found 1 more stuck pixel which makes 1 dead, 4 stuck. -
Heh, well, I'm shipping my SZ back for round number 4!
Once b/c my keyboard wasn't mounted very well, and now 3 times for this LCD buzz, which is irritating beyond compare.
Good luck with your exchange!! Thanks for your feedback! -
Keep us posted, if they successfully fix yours, I might send mine in as well. Thanks! -
I should note that the worst repair experience I had was sending my SZ to the new Sony facility in Memphis --- the folks down there sent MY information, packaging, notes, etc. to some guy in Colorado along with his SZ. He called me on the day that my (and his) package arrived to let me know that he had received all of this information that was obviously supposed to go with my laptop. I also think that the casing on my computer was slightly damaged at the Memphis facility too ---- it's looser than I remember it on one side. The Memphis facility also used different shipping materials (foam packaging and, for some reason, HP repair forms/instructions).
The main Sony repair HQ is in San Diego ---- or around San Diego. Even though they haven't done a very good job in *fixing* my problems, they have always been timely and courteous.
...of course, it all comes down to whether or not your laptop gets repaired, right? I've sent my SZ in three times already (twice for the same thing), and haven't been satisfied with the repairs made yet...which is nuts, b/c Sony is paying for overnight FedEx shipments THREE times for each repair (ship the box to me, me to ship the box to them, them to ship the box back to me) ---- which is SUPER expensive, even with corporate discounts.
I will let you know what they say about the screen this time ---- they're running out of things to replace.
EDIT: oh --- on-site service is something extra that you buy. I'm pretty certain of that. -
Yikes, that doesn't sound good at all. I cringe at the thought of some careless tech being rough with my system, and putting greezy fingerprints all over it. heh
I contacted Sony by chat, and they said the notebook had on-site warranty repair service, but i'll contact them by phone tomorrow to make sure. Online it said that it was send-in service..so we'll see. Lester sounded like he was winging it.
Goodluck with your repair. You should try appealing to them for a system replacement, considering all the trouble so far. Might be worth a shot. -
The last guy I talked to with Sony hinted at a system replacement, since this computer keeps going in for the same repair over and over again. I ordered one of CTO SZ's though, so I don't know how that would work (build it again? offer me soemthing else?).
..and yeah, everytime I've shipped my notebook to sony, it's come back with fingerprints on the screen. -
I checked on my sz and do have the buzz you are talking about, but to hear it i have to put my ear right up by the camera. It also does go away when switching to full brightness.
For me its not noticable at all so i dont plan to make an issue of it unless it gets worse. Good luck with yours. -
Hmmm -- you're the first one with an SZ to reply in the affirmative.
I've looked at several in-store display models of SZs, and haven't found any others that have the same problem as my SZ. It's pretty noticeable on mine.... or at least I think it is.. enough that I never run the SZ off of anything other than max brightness, you know?
In any case, what I want is a straight answer from Sony. Every time I've spoken with a phone tech, they have suggested that I send it in (no one has said that the sound I've reported sounds normal, regular, 'to be expected', or anything like that). The first time I sent it in, a Sony tech called me and said that he could hear the sound, and that it was irregular. It'd be a lot easier to deal with this noise *if* Sony would have said taht there's nothing they can do about it, or something akin to that, yeah?
Anyway, the Sony boys down in Memphis have possession, once again, of my SZ. We shall see what happens. -
I know this is a bit late but -
I recently bought a new SZ340P15, and having a similar problem.
If the LCD brightness is set to max or next to max, the LCD screen makes a high pitch whining sound. It is inconsistent and doesn't make the sound all the time. I can make the sound go away by physically bending the screen to the left or right but it always creeps back.
I sent the unit back to Newegg, but they refused to do anything with it, citing there is 'nothing' wrong.
I'm about ready to drop 4 bills on a new screen cause I can't deal with the long delays of sending it back and forth to Sony. -
Well, I'll pipe in and let you know that the end result to my SZ340 maddness was that Sony offered to let me exchange the 340 for a 360 (my non-premium for a premium model). The different screen type (thinner, LED backlit) doesn't make any of the sounds that my SZ340 did.
I'll also note that I owned a FJ270/b that had similar LCD buzzing sound problems (which I ended up exchanging for the SZ340). Lots of folks say that they can live with the noises ----- I'm waaay too picky about that kind of thing. -
i set mine to max brightness during battery mode and plugged mode. no buzzing at all.
-
Yeah --- I had the same experience. I just hated the fact that I couldn't dim the screen without getting the buzz. Considering the brightness of the LCD is the single most contributing factor towards battery life (or lack thereof), this was a big issue for me.
SZ LCD buzz --- PLEASE comment!! I beg!
