Got a call Friday from Sony tech support (about my long standing issues with my SZ, see my other thread), and after asking about the Space Bar issue was told there is now an official resolution.
Has anyone else heard the same.
Rather dissapointing as I was assured by two techs (one a supervisor) they would personally notify me when a resolution was found.
But guess I should have expected as much![]()
-
So what was the "official resolution" the told you about?
Javier -
Its sending you to this site and applying the sticky paper fiox. lol!
-
Haha, you know I already applied that fix, starstreak!
I know better than to wait for Sony to "fix" a problem... I'd still like to know what they told 5to1 the "resolution" was!
Javier -
They didnt tell me what it was, lol.
Just that there is one.
Awaiting a call from customer services now. Will hopefully have some more info for you after that. All I can say is my estimation of Sony has sunk to even deeper depths then I though possible. Now I have to look for another 1080p LCD panel, having patiently waited for their X series. Because theres not a chance they are getting anymore of my money.
Perhaps someone else who has their machine going in for another repair can ask them. -
Heh, hmm...
-
maybe they resolved it in the newer units? mine doesn't have the spacebar problem and i just got mine last month.
-
Mine is 3 weeks old and has the problem.
-
Same here. Got mine late April/early May and haven't experienced any abhorrent behavior from my spacebar either.
-
i got mine about the same time too. could be a lucky batch.
-
To those who don't experience this problem would it be possible to remove the space bar and describe or take a picture of its back side? I want to see if Sony actually changed the design or added padding to the fixed space bar.
-
I'm certain that it's possible. The better question would be is anyone willing to do that.
I, for one, am not. Any takers?
-
S#&t! I was about to pull my space bar off and take a pic but did a test and found I have the problem when I press it lightly on the very far left and right edges (>_<)* Luckily I don't ever use the edges (^_~).
EDIT: I purchased mine four weeks ago. -
Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Mine is an SZ120P/B and shows no such signs. Wonder what the difference could be?
-
erm, i've never taken apart a notebook before... i'm not sure playing with the keyboard would be the best way to learn, haha
-
Apparantly the solution was found on 16/06/06.
However, thats conveniantly the date I found out about it by accident having waited two months. So wouldn't be suprised if it had been resolved sooner and the supervisor just said the 16th to cover his departments back.
Its not the first "conveniant" response I've heard from them. -
It's extremely easy to remove a key and it will not damage anything. Simply pull it.
To put it back, just add extra pressure until it clicks back in

Just bought my SZ, I went to 3 different Sony Stores in the GTA (can) and most of the demos and ones in the box had a spacebar problem! Most also had another problem - the hard drive is not attached properly! They thus vibrate or send electricity through the palm rests and annoy your hand until it becomes uncomfortable.
That being said, after 3 new boxes, I found one that didn't have either problem and it's great!
PS - there ARE NO sensors on the extreme left side of the mouse bar so any non-function of the extreme left bottom corner Sony doesn't care about. I showed the space problem to two of the stores and both claimed it was the first they saw of this - even after a month! -
Actually it due to a grounding issue with the power supply. It's been talked to death in other posts. Most units will have this problem in one form or another.
-
i actually would like to learn how to take apart my notebook. it would give me the peace of mind knowing i can examine and perhaps repair it myself
what do you mean by pulling it? from where, the back of the laptop or the keyboard side facing the screen?
if you have a link, that would be nice! -
if your laptop fails, it's usually due to an electronic component failing, so nothing you can repair unless your an EE or a qualified technician with access to the right parts.
You grab the space bar key, and you pull until it comes out. nothing fancy or that needs a link.
The way I do it is to slip my thumb nail under the bottom right corner of the space bar, and lift it.

Having got my laptop back the good news is the space bar is largely fixed.
It will still fail to register if u press the key slowly. For example when your scrolling a web page. If you press it hard and fast it registers.
The bad news is the space bar is now raised a couple of mm. Doesn't sound too bad, until you realise it now makes contact with the screen when closed.
When I first got the machine back I noticed a big smudge accross the screen. Thought thats nice of Sony, send my screen back dirty. I then realised it was the space bar making contact with the screen which was causing the issue.
Have called back and apparently the engineers are working out if they can fix the space bar without causing this problem.
Not really what you would expect after having waited over 2 months. But its in keeping with my recent experiences with Sony!
Incase you haven't guessed, i'm one very pissed of customer.
SZ Spacebar issue is apparently resolved
