I'm thinking about getting sz or some of last xt machine. My major concern is outside temperature and fan noise.

What are your impressions - do they get really hot?
I'll have to work w/o a table a lot, i.e. to keep it on my knees and such...

Not hot at all... I had the same concern, with so much packed into a "metal" housing, but the SZ runs AMAZINGLY cool - no hot spots beneath, above or on the side of my SZ110. Hope this helps...

I agree - the SZ 160 runs very cool and very quiet (although, when loading, the DVD/CD drive is noticable) - all in all, a real pleasure.

Saw the SZ at best buy tonight. They must have had it on all day running the Best Buy promo stuff. The palm rests, both left and right, were warm, but not at all uncomfortable.

The palm rests on my sz110 don't even get warm when gaming. It is a very cool machine.

I read that here so I was a bit surprised when I noticed it. It definitely wasn't hot but there was some warmth there, both sides. You have to figure they have had the thing running since they opened the doors this morning. I got there about 6pm, so 9 straight hours of run time might have something to do with it.

Have you noticed how there's ALWAYS someone playing with the SZ no matter what store you go to? Every single time, there's almost a crowd around the thing... The world's first "rock star" laptop!!!

Guys, can you comment specificly about the bottom side of SZ? I'm pretty sure Sony would take care about palmrests, but my concern in about bottom.

I am amazed at how cool my SZ runs! This is my 3rd vaio laptop and I can't believe the difference! Fan noise seems very minimal also. Only time I noticed it was when I was studying for an exam in the library and it was still very faint. Gotta say that after 3 days that my purchase was well worth the wait!

The bottom doesn't get more than "pretty warm" at the most extreme condition. I know that is pretty subjective, but I have been using laptops on a very daily basis for the last 6 years, and I really can't believe how cool this thing is. It gets warmest on the bottom around the rear left corner.

Hey guys. I bought the SZ-140 right when it came out. I was put on the waitign list. I've had the laptop for over a year and half.

When I first got the laptop it ran very cool, but I think over time, my laptop fan has slowly died on me. So now it runs very hot, to the point that my palms get sweaty from the heat.

The laptop is constantly on which also might be a reason for problems that I've had.

In the end, runs farely cool, but get the extended warranty. It's worth it.

thats not the fan dying! I had that problem with my recently retired HP NX6110! It got so hot it would almost burn (even with the fan running full throttle 24/7)! and it constantly crashed!

I decided to open it up, and I found about a half inch of dust sitting inbetween the fan and the heatsink (hadn't been opened for 2.5 years, and was used almost all day every day)! So the fan was sucking up air, and pushing it into the dust, instead of over the heatsink to cool it down (hence the heatsink was heating up and causing the whole system to overheat)!

I removed all the dust, cleaned off the old thermal paste, applied some arctic silver, and put it back together.

Now it runs MUCH cooler! Before I cleaned it, it idled at 63C and would go up to 100C (before it throttled itself and dropped to 93C, then removed the throttle and rose back up to 100C, etc, etc).

Now it idles at about 43C and maxes out at 59C!! Thats a HUGE difference! And it was all caused by a half inch of dust between the fan and the heatsink!
