    hey all,

searched through the forums for info on this question, but results are inconclusive. i recently got a -sweet- SZ491N/X via work, with the idea of doing a lot of work remotely (from the beach actually ;)

this model has the built in cingular sim card setup, but after looking through the forums, i'm wondering if it's even worth fooling with.

is the sim card tied specifically to EDGE? (i'm guessing it's an EDGE modem built in here, and cannot do anything but EDGE, correct?)

everyone's saying that EVDO is the way to go, and so i'm wondering if i plunk down for a data plan with some carrier, if i should even bother with the built-in cingular setup, or should i pop for an express card or pcmcia card for WWAN action?

i'm looking specifically to do a lot of remote ssh connecting for editing files via vim. any clues as to whether or not this is feasible over WWAN without going insane due to high latency?

    thanks all!

If you're going to be doing remote SSH connections, I'd just forget about using the built in EDGE module in the SZ. Sign up for a Sprint SERO data plan and you get a PCMCIA EVDO card for free with the $49 a month plan.

thanks. yeah after doing some more research, it seems the built in cingular edge is pretty much obsolete, and a waste of money.

the sprint sero evdo path seems to be the best bet. thanks again!

I don't think it's worth to do so. Because $49+tax is too expensive for me.

Hate to bring up an old topic....

... but isn't it possible to purchase a $30 SERO plan (which includes unlimited data/txt) with phone and do an ESN swap (switch the phone with the laptop's ESN)?
