Hi guys,
I am planning to buy a sz notebook today at Sony store and the sales told me that they won't get any more new shipment in Canada as this series is to be discontinued. Can someone confirm this? With the SZ160 just released, how come the life cycle of this series is so short? Are there any potential problems with this design or there is new improved series coming soon? Should I wait for the new series? Thank you.

oh gods if thats true then their probally working on a merom system which means they wont bother with a bios upgrade to let yonah use merom :'(
-
That is why I asked the new serie SZXXX?
-
I wonder if it is just the usual Sony trend. Release a system and upgrade only a month or two down the road. Merom won't be showing up any time soon, and I don't think Sony will leave themselves with a gap in that sector for some 5 months or maybe more.
If a new batch will be released soon, then it will also benifit from intel's price drops expected mid next month. -
Maybe they will issue a new serie with a new keyboard and ...
-
did they make enough money from the SZ already?
-
-
Maybe discontinued in Canada...
since they dont have a bilingual keyboard available... who knows.
I know that this machine is hard to find in Quebec since it doesn't have a french keyboard... could that be related ?
I did find one regardless... I want an English keyboard anyway. -
Is it really possible that would stop making the SZ so soon? What gives? This news would certainly make me not purchase the SZ. Sounds like they are having too many problems. Can anyone confirm this as far as USA is concerned.

The SZ is still for sale on the UK SonyStyle website, and the SZ170FP has just been released on the SonySyle.Cl Chilean website, although their 170 comes with a T2300 (1.66ghz) cpu. So no, it doesn't look like its being discontinued worldwide.

Lets not have uninformed sales reps start rumors again. We all know what happened with the carbon fiber debate.

Maybe the Electric shock / tingle on palmrest problem?
-
everyone stop it (myself included). as Xprohx suggests, ask Sony.

I got confirmation from Sony that they have stopped the production of new units as the series is to be discontinued. Noone will get back order for SZ120 & 160 anymore when they sold out in Canada. Sonystyle has already removed the sz160 from the site. Same as the US and HK site too, no more premium unit available.
-
Did they give you a reason for this?

The 160 has been off the US Sony site for some time. That’s not a recent development. They haven’t been able to keep up with demand. But Sony stores in the US get some units trickling in on an irregular basis. This doesn’t mean the unit is cancelled.
This looks more like either:
1.) The Sony reps are wrong yet again and have misinformed this user
Or
2.) Its true - this user is the first to hear about it and happened to bring it here
In either case I suggest we get multiple confirmations before this gets blown out of proportion. -
A sales rep in the Orlando sony store told me the same thing, but my interpretation was different. It seemed to me like he did not expect to receive that many more SZ160's, not that they would not get any more SZ's period.
But then, I also took everything he said with a grain of salt regardless because when I asked about the cameras, he flipped the little cards over to read them...as though I could not have figured out what they said all by myself.
I also got the feeling they did not sell all that much out of that store, they didn't have anything I was interested in in stock, and the man seemed confused when I said I wanted to buy a computer. It was kind of surreal.
Also, the SZ is still on Sony's website in the form of the 140, and the 160 was there for half of last week. The fact that it's gone again means very little. -
the entire SZ series is not discontinued, just certain models.
