my SZ hangs on shutdown, on the blue screen when it says that windows is shuting down. it does not happen that often. but i still dont know what is the reason that triggers it to hang on shutdown.

anyone have the same issues? how do you fix this

    thanks!

I have the same problem. It is not consistent and it happens mainly when the SZ is connected to the docking station I have at home. I also have a docking station at work and the problem does not happen there as frequently.

My suspicion is that it has something to do with the USB devices that are connected to the docking station I have at home, in my case, a USB docking device for my HP h6315 iPAQ Pocket PC and USB connection for my Brother MFC-6800 multifunction printer/fax/scanner device. I also have an Ethernet cable attached to both home and work docking stations. I do not have any USB devices attached to the docking station at work, which might explain why I do not have the shutdown problem as often in that location.

When I am traveling and not connected to any USB devices or docking stations, I virtually never have the problem, although occasionally the SZ will do a shut down and restart, even though I have selected a shut down only.

There is a known USB issue with shutdown that has been documented elsewhere in the NBR Sony forum but the downloads from the Sony website and from Microsoft have not fixed it. I suppose that, even if you do not have any external USB devices attached to your SZ, the built-in camera is supposedly an internal USB device. I guess that could be a source of the problem as well.

The same with me guys. It happens maybe once a week or so. Mine is without any external USB devices other than cammera and card reader. It doesn't bother me very much.
The other thing is the user switch (switch user icon or activated by finger sensor by somebody who is not loged on). It virtaully always freezes completly when the new user stuff begins to load on the taskbar. However, log off user and login new user works 100% ok.

my SZ ALWAYS hangs at shutdown and it has been ever since i bought it. When i first purchased it, there was also something wrong with the CMOS so I snet itback and they replaced it. I assumed that that would fix the shutdown problem, but it didnt go away

Are any of you guys running Norton AntiVirus? I was getting this shutdown hanging when I first bought my SZ. Once I removed Norton and replaced with PC-Cillin, all has been peachy :)

Javier, I uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus about 3-4 weeks after receiving my SZ160P. I installed AVG (paid edition, not the free one) at that time. I did not do either the full or semi-restore.

Same thing happened to my S 580B. Turns out windows was doing a lot of tasks at shutdown. I just left it alone for like 5 minutes until it shut down. Then it never happened again. Let it do its thing.

There's also a microsoft hotfix that you had to call for - before my 160, I had a 120 that exhibited this behavior and this little hotfix zapped the problem. Try it out, hope it helps!

EDIT: I changed the extension of the file to .pdf so I could post it. Once you download it, you must change the file extension back to .exe to run it.

Hi all, maybe I arrive late, but realized the system does not hang up when the camera is disabled. So, disable it after using it... I have not a better solution. I will try the hotfix posted

That's actually what the hotfix addresses directly. It fixes the USB webcam on the SZ so that it shuts down properly.

I had already installed the Microsoft HotFix file KB909667.exe back in April but it did not help my shutdown issue. It seems that, in my case, the shutdown problem is related to external USB devices connected to the docking station. I may try unplugging the USB devices from the docking station, one-by-one, to see if I can isolate the culprit(s).

The Brother MFC-6800 multifunction printer, scanner, copier and fax machine is the USB device connected to the docking station that is not allowing full shutdown.

The other USB device connected to the docking station at my home is the HP h6315 iPAQ Pocket PC. That USB device is not causing any shutdown problems when it is plugged into the docking station by itself.

Guillermedico - I've ben dealing with this problem as well and I have the Brother MFC-4800. I was feeling like one of my USB devices was hanging the system as it never hangs at home...I'm going to remove the printer before shutdown to see if that's theculprit - thanks for spotting this!

I just tried a shutdown at work where I have this problem always and removed the Brother MFC-4800 USB connection first. The computer shut down perfectly fine!! :) Thanks again guys and everyone with this problem should try out their USB peripherals...it was definitely the Brother in my case. Good thing I tried this since Sony's recommendation after 1 hour of tech support (diligent nonetheless) was to recover the computer and start over from scratch.

Just for anyone's reference, I would sometimes get hangs on the blue screen upon shutting down windows but more often the computer would hang on the BLACK screen when it appeared the computer shutdown (mouse disappears) but the power light and WLAN light remained on and the computer was very much powered up.
    Best,

rezloh, you're very welcome! Glad you figured the Brother multifunction machine was the culprit in your case too.

rezloh, those are exactly the two patterns of hanging up on shutdown that I have been getting with my Brother MFC-6800. The black screen with power apparently still on has been the more common pattern than the blue screen with mouse pointer present (but immovable).

After about two weeks my SZ hanged on shutdown yesterday. This morning when I start it up I had the message sort of winlogon.exe had the problem to close previous day. Does the process have got something to do with USB?

qwerty and imrichard: are you both using the factory installed OS? Did any of you attempt to do a semi-restore?

The problem is probably caused by an application or service that's failing to terminate. You can try editing your registry to fix this problem.

thanks for the reply bogart. i'll be applying the registry edit and see what happens.

i did not perform any clean installs yet but i uninstalled all the bloatware. will the semi-clean install fix this problem as well? i might do the semi clean install when i have the time.

imrichard, did you notice any performance gain after the semi-clean install? about how long does it take your laptop to boot?
sorry for going a little off topic

qwerty, if i remember well right after semi-clean it was a really noticable gain in booting speed. the same also for fan speed; i remember my idle sz sitting virtually noisless (after HD turned off) for minutes. but with every additional crap i installed afterwards (antivirus, skype etc...) it has been slightly worse, but not bad at all. i will measure the booting time for you later today...

I have a VGN-SZ38GP, running Win XP Pro SP2, with Norton Antivirus installed.
I have the same problem - the shutdown will hang very often - after I've put the laptop in hibernate.
It'll shutdown fine if it hasn't been hibernating.
I've applied the hotfix (KB909667) mentioned, did the registry changes but with no effect.
I am very reluctant to remove Norton (as one of the suggestion says) - I've paid for the subscription.
    I am really frustrated

Assuming the operating system here is XP, try UPHclean, available from Microsoft. It helps programs to unload at shutdown.

I bought the SZ 680 for my wife & spent about a week tweaking the hell out of it for her.....I experienced the hang you are talking about & spent about half a day going thru MSCONFIG isolating what was causing it.....It's the biometric fingerprint reader that causes the hang....I managed to consistently replicate the problem. Try disabling it in the device manager and also disable the software for it (use msconfig to stop the software from autostarting.
Please post if this works for you

Babydarklord - Yes I have tried KB909667, but it didn't help.
Jasfra - thanks but i'll leave that as the last resort. I have become very dependent on the biometric reader - I store all my site passwords with it.
