    EDGE kind of sucks now.

3G service is already out. Get a 3G PC Card and you can surf at close to DSL speeds.

And right now Cingular charges the same price for EDGE and 3G data plans.

Yeah, the Sony/Cingular deal really stinks. $80 for sub-standard speeds is rediculous. I actually prefer the Verizon service, but it depends on where you are.

thanks, I had initially thought exactly as you put it.

However on more research I found that the 3G card for now is useless except for handful of cities (like Chicago, NewYork). I live in Minneapolis, and we aren't expected to get the umts/hsdp service till atleast one more year.

So thats why I think, its better to get Notebook with Edge built in ... cause I think it may drain your battery also, plus more weight, more bulge (antenna) etc. Any thoughts ?

Cingular 3G is avail in a few cities - they claim many more by end of 2006:

    Arizona—Phoenix

    California—San Diego

    California—San Francisco and San Jose

    District of Columbia and Baltimore

    Illinois—Chicago

    Massachusetts—Boston

    Nevada—Las Vegas

    Oregon—Portland

    Texas—Austin

    Texas—Dallas

    Texas—Houston

    Utah—Salt Lake City

    Washington—Seattle and Tacoma

Verizon BroadBand is avail in something like 180 cities and 72 airports - it is also only $59/mo unlimited use for pretty impressive speeds

need to be very careful with new duo core notebooks and these WWAN services - Sony is good - they include both an old PC Card slot - and new ExpressCard format

the ExpressCard is virtually worthless today - and thru likely the end of the 3rd quarter at best probably - there are no ExpressCards of hardly any type - in fact the ExpressCard.org site has only I think a little more than a dozen total approved cards

many of the new Duo Core notebooks - and the new MacBooks - ONLY have ExopressCard slots - meaning you are outta luck with Pc Card wireless

there are a few options for using a phone with a cable but that pretty much defeats the whole purpose

Do you all know if TMobile also has the 3G network? I might as well upgrade my card.. even though I paid full price for it! Oh well after you blow $2g's on a laptop whats another $200!!
