I was wondering if Sony plans to release the SZ with a better video card than the 8400. I was thinking along the lines of the 8600 series.

Probably not...that laptop is so thin and tiny its a miracle they got an 8400 in it.

Well, LG has a 13.3 inch laptop with nVidia 8600 in it, so I guess it is not completely impossible :) . However, when buying a laptop, you also have to consider things such as battery life. If you choose to have a 8600 video card then your battery is going to be drained much more quickly and I believe this is one of the main reasons sony didn't put in the 8600.

oo.. and also the 8600 runs much more warmer so the laptop will need a better cooling system (thus using more energy from the battery)

I was wondering this because I just read that the LG 13incher had an 8600 and was thinking if sony was going to follow. Your comment on battery life makes sense. :( Just wished that I could have both. Anyone know how much of a difference in performance the 8400 is compared to the 8600?

the 8600 would make the laptop so much hotter, i love my sz with the 8400, i never really use it (turn it off) but when i do, its still not bad at all on your lap. if an 8600 was put in such a small casing like this, it would be much more uncomfterble to put on your lap.

and as far as battery life, yes it would drain it - but just switch to integrated graphics and then you get a very big boost in battery!

Keep it mind the LG doesn't have a built-in optical drive. Thats the sacrifice they had to make to put in the 8600 I'm sure. It does come with a nice external one though.

I haven't looked, but how does the LG's battery life compare to the SZ?

I've read a review about LG laptop a few weeks ago, the battery life didn't really impress me at all. I think (but not 100% sure) it has 3 hours of battery life.

My friend and I were considering the SZ series as our next notebooks but are disappointed by Sony's choice of the 8400M GS. The GS's 64MB video memory allows it to play games from the last 5-10 years well but it puts it at an immediate disadvantage for any recent games which require (a minimum) of 128MB video memory. Why wouldn't Sony opt for it's superior sibling - the 8400M GT (128MB VRAM)?! From what I understand both of these cards are virtually identical except for the discrete memory.

They need to refresh the SZ series lineup soon! Dell, LG and other manufacturers all have 13.3" notebooks with far superior cards in them.

You need to understand that the SZ is not a gaming machine to begin with...
